ParticipantHello, I have an old but until recently, very reliable Miele washing machine. It has started to display that there is a drain fault but it’s random, doesn’t always appear. I have checked what I think could be the usual suspects such as filters, blocked outlet hose, flood switch, I’ve even replaced the drain pump as the old one was a bit noisy although it did still work. There are no leaks under the machine which I’m assuming rules out the flood switch as a possible cause. I really want to keep this machine going so I’m hoping that you will be able to point me in the right direction. Thanks very much.

ParticipantHello Dave, thanks very much for your advice. I did this and I can’t believe how much gunge came out of the tubes! However, the machine is still doing the same, gets to the spin cycle, this time on minimum iron 30 and the same fault happens. I’m sure I’ve cleaned out all the tubes, I ran water through them to flush them out. I also removed the big hose that connects the soap drawer to the drum, there was a bit of crap in there but nothing major. Could I have missed something? Cheers, David

Moderatorassume you took the y peice off the tube as well and cleaned it out
now the pipe comes out of the pump and goes to a vertical plastic tube up the back inside of the machine. This then goes through the top and connects to the outlet hose
remove it and clean it as have had these blockDave

ParticipantHi, thanks for your reply. Yes, I took the Y piece out and cleaned it out, also the short black tube that goes from the Y piece to the vertical plastic tube you mentioned. I’ll have another look. Thanks. David

Moderatorif the vertical plastic tube is blocked double check the outlet hose
you can normally tell its blocked by the weight. its only a light plastic structure and its will feel far heavier then it should
also take outlet hose off. bend it and twist it in all sort of direction and then get a hose on it and see what comes out

ParticipantHave just fixed my w524 thanks to Dave’s tip elsewhere on this forum (couldn’t have done it without you, Dave!) and found some plastic clips (the sort you’re supposed to take off the new shirt before you put it in the wash…) had worked their way up the breather hose – their shape acted like barbs, so they wouldn’t just wash through… had to really squeeze the tubing to get them out – a fine plug of gunk had built up around them. David, perhaps you’ve got some sort of gunk built up like a flap, thus creating a one-way valve (the wrong direction!)? A wash through both directions would illuminate…

ParticipantHello Dave, thanks very much for your support. Glad to report that the machine is now working properly. I found a load of gunk had broken away from the ribbed outlet hose after I’d given it a good beating as you suggested, I thought I’d flushed it all out the first time, but it had blocked the connection under the sink. I will keep an eye on it as I’m sure there’s more bits that will break away. I’m considering removing this ribbed drain hose and replace it with something that has a smooth internal surface, no chance of allowing debris to get trapped and build up over time. thanks again. David

Moderatorsmooth hoses are more likely to kink. thats why they are ribbed
