I was at a friends Smeg range cooker replacing a fan oven element. Typically it was 5 years 1 months old and Smeg refused to fix despite 5 year guarantee.

The Lady uses the steam clean function quite a bit. You some water in the bottom and turn it to steam to help cleaning.

A nightmare getting the element out. Everything was rusted. One retaining screw just pulled out by hand although it was colpletelely rusted to the element. The other had to be drilled out.

The area around both the screw fixings were completely shot. Rusted away. Nothing left for the screws to bite into. I had to cut metal back and fit captive nuts. A quick bit of thinking on my feet – I feel quite good about that fix. 🙂

There’s also signs of rust in various places in the oven.

A few questions: Is this due to the cleaning method or is it just poor quality Smeg? Surely an oven is supposed to be able to handle hot moist air!
It was on a Smeg Victoria range Range cooker.

Any thoughts or your experiences would be appreciated. Thanks Steve

This is just a hunch but I think you probably nailed it with:

“The Lady uses the steam clean function quite a bit”

If overused then that’s probably to be expected. 🙁

I used to come across that quite a bit, guy’s out there used their ovens in many weird ways including placing tins of water in the base and using that as a steam oven.
It did not matter what type of oven any manufacturer makes over use of this type of cooking using water as a cooking agent, the steam will cause corrosion at the points mentioned.
I came across this a lot on Neff ovens and the fane element was a bugger to replace.
