    Hi,

I am keen on buying the 10kg-capacity Haier HW100-B14876 washing machine but my other half is of the opinion that the same but smaller 8kg-capacity Haier HW80-B14876 would be more suitable as we will not be needing to put in more than 8kg washing very often, and it is harder to deal with drying such a large amount of laundry each time.

I feel that, since the 10kg washing machine is the same size as our old 6kg washing machine, it would therefore be an ideal use of the space we have in the kitchen, and that, even though we may hardly ever go over 8kg, the machine’s weighing scale technology would tailor the washing cycle accordingly so there will be no wastage of water and energy by going for the extra capacity. It is a “nice to have”. Buying the 8kg machine would not save any space as we will need to bring the machine forward so that its front is flush with the front of the worktop anyway, and – ironically – the 8kg washer is more expensive.

Her counter-argument is that consistently using the machine with a lot of empty space would be detrimental to the longevity of the machine. There’s no point having a “nice to have” if it means having it break down more often.

We’d love to hear your opinions.

(In case you’re wondering why we’ve narrowed down to Haier, it’s because they’re the only sub-£500 washer manufacturer who sell 59.5cm-width machines with 5 year warranty as standard. We can’t have it any wider than 59.5cm, as there’s only about 7mm left to spare after that)

    I don’t know I’d buy a Haier period or recommend one but…

Just had the misfortune of buying anew machine. Here’s my experience of the machines – for what its worth.
Up graded to a washer dryer two machines ago – suits us – wouldn’t go back. 1st one made drying d=faster – but by no means dry. Second one (AEG8000 series) capable of near combustion imminent dry! So had to use less drying. The last one was 10Kg wash – 6 kg dry. We do sometimes do large loads (bedding, towels etc) and the capacity is fully used. The last machine lasted 7 ears – then the bearing went. Sounded like a bulldozer racing on gravel. I think when they start to go – they are an end of life continuous problem. Bought another – – 9000 series. Didn’t check – it was 30mm taller – carpenter finished cutting a slot in the worktop today! (feeling sheepish)
But – the machines are quiet (less than conversation level) until the bearings go. The sensors and tech weigh the contents and adjust water levels etc. All the times for washing vary according to load. Its way cleverer than me. It works hard (usually at least three loads a day – some are only 1Kg. Latest heat pump tech makes it more eco friendly – but it is quiet enough to use cheap rate electric at night.
I think get a big one. The link offered by kwatt says it has issues – but time has moved tech on. Yes the space is fully used – like the engine bay of a car these days.
The physics has not changed – but the methods of achieving the wash action and soap/dirt reaction have. Just like the physics of a petrol engine have not changed – but there is no denying the longer life, better fuel efficiency and reduced emissions over the last decade alone.

Do it. Get a big one.

There in lies a lot of issues, life expectancy has reduced in line with prices as the build quality gets less and less. Ask any engineer what they think of the build quality and repairability of current appliances stand well back and wait for the comments. Trouble with kg machines is that the bearings and build are not upgraded to cope with the extra loading which is why they fail!!

Out of interest which model washer dryer with heat pump did you go for?

Washing machines are all the same height at 85cm and are designed to fit under standard worktops unless you have had wood block flooring fitted. I am interested in which model you have?

How much 10kg is better? I mean do you really notice the amount of that extra 2kg of clothes?

1 kg is approx five long sleeve shirts so not much in the big scheme of things.

Yes Don but as well you will know, what they say is 10kg and what actually *is* 10kg of useable load are or can be two different things.
