    Hi,
I have a Bosch SMV53A00GB/04 integrated dishwasher with an issue. A few months ago it stopped working and by chance I discovered that it would work again, but only if the door was held shut. This was initially with a hand or knee but has now become a wood brace on the cupboards opposite and a spreading clamp.
I can hear the latch (in the main frame) engage with the door when the door is closed. The door requires the usual amount of effort to open it. If I manually press the latch release arm then the latch pops into place (requiring me to move it back with some metal tool). Based on that I think that the mechanical door latch is working as intended.
I find that simply closing the door is insufficient to start the cycle. It needs a light pressure on the door to start it up, but with the pressure in place it works fine. If I release the pressure then the cycle stops.
I’ve tried taking the racks out but think the issue remains. I say “think” as that was a few months ago.
I’ve tried cleaning the sump and impeller, but that had no effect.
Can anyone suggest what might be going on with the machine and what I could try to fix it?
    Merry Christmas!

first you need to check there is no mechanical answer to this

take the outer kitchen door off it and try it then

Thanks for the suggestion Dave. I’ll give that a go and report back.

just in case you have marble or granite work surfaces
we get a lot of kitchen fitters have used a wooden batten above the dishwasher between the top of the dishwasher and the kitchen surface. this means to make it look good the outer kitchen door sticks above the control panel. what a have found on a number of occasions is the dishwasher moves backwards over time and the top of the outer door hits the wood stopping it from closing completely and in some cases stopping the door switch from working

when you take the outer door off it will then work ok

As it happens I do have a stone worktop and there is a batton running over the top of the machine. Sounds like I could have a simple fix and so will try taking the door off tomorrow (wasn’t allowed to today for some reason). The kitchen fitter screwed through the machine casing (outside the door seal) into the cabinets on either side, but it’s an easy thing to check and so worth trying first.

Great news (for me and based on a sample of one). Removing the door has allowed a programme to complete without the door having to be held shut. Your experience shines through Dave, thank you.

I now need to work out what is fouling the door and adjust it as that should enable me to refit the panel. It looks like the trim fitted by the kitchen people is the issue and shouldn’t be too bad to sort out.

Thank you for taking the time to consider and advise on this issue.

Just to complete the thread, I’ve investigated the issue and found that it was a metal trim above the cupboard (and machine) doors which was causing the issue. The strip is held on with clips to the carcass and one of these had moved which pushed the strip forwards. This stopped the door from closing properly, unless it was held. I was able to reposition the clip and get the strip back into the right place. I’ve put the door back on and have just completed a wash cycle with the door and without holding it closed.
Once again, thanks for your help.
