ParticipantWith the influx of new members recently and currently on-going, bit of a clean up required IMO.
Iadom’s current avatar is offensive – never mind the Penguin bashing bit, I don’t mind the fun and games in Off Topic in the least. I have told him that it’s rude – he’s promised not to run the animation 🙄 . Somebody please tell him to deal with it…….
Martin, that horse ought to being doing something else – like throwing off and kicking the rider to cries of “Take that, Yurtesen”.
There are probably others, but it’s late and I’m knackered.
I am just rather worried that we become complacent in each stage of UKW’s growth – we seem to be opening another new chapter recently with lots of new members coming into the trade area, and it does concern me that it looks bad.
If Iadom and I post on the same topic that’s going to look really dumb.
Thanks for listening,

My long held views on certain ‘happenings’ on UKW seem to be affecting others then eh?
I feel better now having read your post Chris thanks, unless that is you are turning into a grumpy old git like me, but I doubt it 😆
I will PM Iadom over his avatar if you like.
Yurtesen?…now he understands the theory of his washer/dryer and the bearings haven’t turned rusty just yet, he will pop back again in a few weeks time I expect to ask Dave to source a new drum shaft….fear not :rotfl:
Is my ‘dashing white charger’ creating to much poo I wonder?

we have to be careful on this I think. Striking a balance between what we consider reasonable and others do would be hard at best.
I do think that Iadoms avatar is a bit riske as well TBH and I was a bit surprised to see that logo. It’s been on the internet for a long time indeed and is generally regarded as a joke. But yeah, can you try to appeal to his better judgement Martin? If that doesn’t work Dave or I will PM him as well. 😉
In all honesty I think that the approach that we’ve had so far, going in and starring out stuff, politely asking people to cool it has worked and, worked far better than the newsgroup nazi way of doing things. This has all been done before on newsgroups and mailing lists, still is on many I use, where you get a lot of twats that come in.
Should you go at it too hard you get one of two possible reactions, they leave or you have a confrontational situation. Very little lies between I’m afraid and it just depends on the character of the person which way it will go, neither appeal to me. So, in moderating I’ve learned to take the path of gentle suggestion and ask that the people moderate themselves, in that way they are far more liable to comply with the rules (such as they are) and also to project that onto others, saving me valuable time.
In the private forums, such as here, it is nowhere near as important, but in the trade ones and the public it is.
However the point is that the “softly, softly” appraoch works and has served us very well thus far, I think that should not change.

We shall see?
Copy of PM wrote:Jim,
Your latest avatar has created a bit of a stir, sadly for all the wrong reasons in some quarters. Please could I ask you seek a more acceptable alternative, I could assist you in this regard should you require an animated avatar.
(You no doubt have seen many that I have created such as kwatt’s, Dave_Conways, the ‘Repairs@’ toolbox, the Shop@ avatar etc etc.)
Thanks

KeymasterThanks Martin hopefully that will solve it without too much fuss.

As with most censorship, it evokes interest in an otherwise no noticed subject. I find myslef desperate to see what his avatar was as I cannot remember anything out of the ordinary.
Maybe time to switch of the avatar option?

Jim had a white and red rose, then went on to the imp and the penguin.
I don’t see a point in turning the option off, just a bit of common sense as well as taste and decency should apply.

Yes, quite Chris, we can’t switch it off, it would remove the individuality of any new and the existing members, and there’s a whole load of brilliant non offensive avatars out there, including the one’s Martin has created 😀
A little understated on Jim’s as well methinks 😉 It was basically an imp or demon shagging a penguin 😯 😆

KeymasterIt’s the Linux penguin actually and, if memory serve, the demon represents Open BSD or some such crap. In reality another cheap net trick that was funny at the time.. oh about two or three years ago or so. 😕

I have deleted 2 of Alexa’s jokes today in the “A Joke” thread and PM’d him my reasoning behind my actions. Now I am as broad minded as anyone else here but I firmly believe jokes about oral and carnal sex should not be part of UKW remit.
I trust you guys go along with that ideal?

Yep, that’s why I asked, I was talking to Ken in IRC about deleting the most recent one and it had already vanished 😀
It was funny though 😆

The joke was even better when I went (10 years back or so) to the Embassy Club and heard Bernard Mannings version :rotl:
Never get up and go for a piss during a comedians performance at a stag night by the way 😉

ok so i miss the avatars, I miss out on the jokes (“Carnal” I dont think I have heard or seen that word since 1974) surely non of this is as offensive as Gegsy’s Ar5enal shirt.

Just for Mark…
A woman was in a coma. She had been in it for months. Nurses were in her room giving her a blanket bath. One of them was washing her private area and noticed that there was a slight response on the monitor when she touched her. They tried it again and sure enough there was sizable movement. They went to her husband and explained what happened, telling him, “As crazy as this sounds, maybe a little oral sex will do the trick” He reluctantly agreed and was left alone with his wife. A few minutes later the nurses heard an alarm and the wife’s monitor had flatlined. “What happened?” asked one of the nurses “I don’t know” replied the husband “perhaps she choked”
😆
Summat like that anyway 😉
Dave.
