ParticipantI’m in the market for a new insulation tester. I also want to use it for continuity testing to save me carrying my clamp meter around.
I’ve always had Megger testers but I’m open to suggestions.. so long a they’re polite ones..

ParticipantHave you made any choice?
I’m also looking at a new insulation and continuity tester.
Seen some that also do multimeter on Test4Less.co.uk and test-meter.co.uk . Would mean I’d carry 2 testers rather than 3 (I currently have a Socket&See insulation and continuity tester, a multimeter and a 4-in1 loop/voltage/wiring/polarity tester). Also means my current ones are a spare set I can use when the others are being calibrated.
I’d be happy to hear what people think of them, especially if you’re using one of them yourself.

ModeratorLook at the metrahit iso if you are looking for 1 meter that does everything that you need as a appliance engineer not cheap £750 but I’ve had the older model since 2009 and has never let me down german built too

ParticipantThanks for that. Good to hear someone is using one of those combination insulation/DMMs and happy with it. The Metrahit looks impressive but probably too high specs for my use. I have seen the Brymen bm878 which seems to do everything I need it to do at more than half the price. OK it’s made in Taiwan not in Germany, but I have read good things about this make.

ParticipantI use the Fluke 1587 as my daily meter and apart from needing a couple of sets of test leads it hasn’t let me down at all in the last 11 years.

ParticipantI received the Brymen bm878 a few days ago, and started using it yesterday. So far, so good. Still getting used to it. It’s quite chunky and is only 100g lighter than my 2 separate testers together. But my multimeter was starting to show signs of weakness, so the 2 testers will be a good spare set.
The downsides of the combined tester is I have to keep unplugging the test leads to do various measurements. Also I can see me losing the test lead caps fairly quickly.
The big plus is the test lead with an integrated test button.August 19, 2021 at 10:07 am #474355RocketMan
ParticipantI know this an old thread. Just bit the bullet and waiting on my new BM878 to arrive. I couldn’t justify the Metrahit cost. I have my old clamp meter that I keep on the van that will fill any gaps my new BM878 won’t fill.
