ParticipantHello I hope someone will be able to shed some light on this problem and help me out,
I have a INDESET IWE 71451 B ECO UK washing machine approx. 8 years old that is tripping the circuit braker when used. Machine turns on and display lights up, close the washer door and it trips the RCD. disconnect the heating element and shut the door RCD is tripped, Heating element re-connected and motor disconnected, door closed, button pressed and machine starts a cycle and not tripping RCD. Removed motor, wired it up on the workbench first to 12volt battery and motor worked and secondly wired to the mains electric and the motor works and does not trip RCD while running on the bench, what am I missing ?, about 4 years ago machine tripped RCD but I diagnosed a faulty door switch and replaced it with a new one and all has been well until now. Any thoughts and opinions welcomeFebruary 9, 2021 at 10:04 am #475000electrofix
Moderatordid you connect the earth to the motor when you tested it as the trip is detecting earth faults, no earth no trip
also even if you bench test it you may have wires in different places to the machine. you need to test it with an insulation tester and see what you getDave

ParticipantHello Dave thanks for the replie,,when the motor was in the machine I removed the terminal block from the motor ( 7 wires ) and the seperate earth wire, turned the machine on and closed the washer door with no RCD trip and then pressed the button and a wash cycle started,, connect the terminal block and earth wire turn power on and shut the door it trips the RCD. Testing motor on work bench with mains power live, neutral ,and earth are connected,,, have I tested incorectly ?. afraid I don`t know what a insulation tester is.

Moderatorit does sound like your motor has a fault
i assume this machine has brushes, remove brush holders and clean all the carbon dust off and replace and see what happens
an insulation tester tests the resistance to earth using a high voltage. normally 500v. Commonly known as a megger

ParticipantHello Dave,
Did some checks hoping to find a problem?
Resistance between both brush wires terminals 1 & 2 ( in my case, black and grey wires ) = 4 ohm.
Resistance between winding wires terminals 3 & 4 & 5( in my case 3 wires RED terminal 3, blue terminal 4 and brown terminal 5 ) 3 & 4 = 1.4 ohms,, terminal 4 & 5 = 1.3 ohms, and terminals 3 & 5 =2 ohms.
Resistance between both heating element terminals 30 ohms.
All seems well, as you suggested removed and cleaned motor brushes with brake cleaner, didn’t seem that dirty,,, put It all back together and oddly everything works and no RCD tripping,, must admit I’m baffled by not finding something at fault but all’s well that ends well, many thanks for your reply and advise Dave It was much appreciated.

Moderatorthe fault is between the brushes and the metal casing of the motor and its resistance should measure millions of ohms
same with the heater you measure between either terminal and the metal casing
so hopefully a build up of carbon dust allowed a small current to go to earth with tripped it
