I’ve replaced a blown top element in my Smeg oven. After fitting the oven works fine but the grill isn’t heating up. The resistance measurements on the new element fitting – both grill and oven elements – are fine so the new part is OK. The three control dials and lights on the front panel seem to be working fine. Any suggestions? Many thanks.

strill could be the switches as there will be one contact that contols the grill and it may have blown when the element did

you need to remove the switch and check for damage

Thanks – you mean the selector switch for grill/oven/fan that’s set by the front panel rotary control?

    correct

if element went with a big bang it can blow contacts

    remove switch and examine contacts

Well, I’ve taken out the switch and it looks absolutely fine. Mechanically it’s all working perfectly, the contacts all open and close as intended. No sign of scorching or arcing on any of the contacts. The plastic lobes on the cam are 100{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} fine.

Any ideas about the next thing I might look at?

Also, as it may be relevant – when the grill setting is on there is a fairly quiet mechanical whirring sound that starts up. The same noise could be heard when the grill was working properly. (It’s not the fan, that comes on with a separate ‘grill + fan’ setting.)

OK, I think the whirring sound is the cooling fan (as opposed to the oven fan).

there will be a thermal cutout, you need to find and check that

Thanks for all the help, it’s been spot-on.

I found the thermal cutout in the back of the cooker and it was fine on the multimeter. But I also found a spade connector that had come loose. No idea what could have caused it, but reattaching it securely fixed the fault. 🙂
