ParticipantHi All,
Have been reading through the forum and lots of helpful information. However I’m hoping people can give me some recommendations for a new washer dryer.
Now I know people don’t like washer dryers. Unfortunately we just don’t have the space for two separate machines so we need a washer dryer. We bought a cheap Hoover washer dryer when we first moved in our house 5 years ago and it is now having a slow painful death. The machine is on its way out so it is time to think about a replacement. When we first moved it we just got something cheap but now I want to pay more to get a decent machine that will last us.
We are a small family with two adults and one baby. So the washing machine gets used quite a lot with the baby but not massive loads of washing. I have a budget of around £800-£900 for the machine. I would like a decent warranty so really 5 years plus. I don’t want to fork out money to then be left with an expensive weight in 2 or 3 years.
With my research it seems AEG, LG and Samsung are quite popular machines. They come with a 5 year warranty which I like although after reading around it seems Samsung parts can be hard to get hold of. Also it seems some of the machines “features” are just extra things to go wrong such as the add wash and wifi control. It is very rare things miss the wash and I’ve never had the need to control my washing machine from my phone. How do people rate AEG or LG?
I know a lot of people recommend Miele but their machine is £1300 and only comes with a 2 year warranty.
I’m kind of leaning towards the AEG. Is this a good way to lean or would you recommend something else?

ModeratorI could lean towards the AEG or it’s sister Zanussi 🙂
Have heard good reports recently that Beko is to be considered as well.
These aside and the Miele there is not a lot else out there. Can you not get a seperate dryer and washer in?

ParticipantUnfortunately we definitely can’t fit separates, well unless I kicked the wife out and her clothing collection :p
Both the Zanussi and Beko only do 1 year warranty. Obviously it isn’t a guarantee you will or will not have an issue with the machine, as they say you pays your money. However with AEG offering 5 year warranty they obviously think offering 5 years won’t be too costly to them which gives me some confidence in what they think of their own build quality.

ModeratorOne year guarantees have been the norm since the late sixties ( when I came into this industry), it was only when we joined the EU that the european manufacturers have given a two year warranty which some UK names then followed.
The five and ten year ones which are usually found on Miele appliances are purely promotional ones which they hope will sell more units thus increasing market share.
The only AEG freestanding washer dryer on John Lewis is their flagship model L8WEC166R at just over a grand with a five year warranty all the rest are two years. So just like Miele a promo guarantee. Like all promo guarantees it has to be underwritten by an insurer at a cost which is no doubt built into the price of the appliance.

ParticipantI bought an LG just over 4 years ago because it had a 5yr warranty, worked great while we had it. At about 3.5 years we noticed the top got unusually hot and had a slight smell so I called an engineer, when he took the lid off it had burnt through the casing of what I believe was the element. Now he did say at the time some joints didn’t look normal (excess silicon) and he wondered if it had been returned and repaired.
To be fair to LG they investigated and gave me a full refund. I have now bought another LG again with 5yr warranty, make of that what you will!
