Problem with a Hotpoint TDC32 Tumble Dryer.
It just finished a drying cycle and rather than switching off, just started to buzz loudly and I could smell burning.
Any ideas/comments?

Can you revolve the drum from inside by hand, it should be possible to turn the drum with a lttle force. If is very stiff you could have a motor failure. A capacitor failure would not cause a burning smell.
It could be a motor failure. Not a major expense, would suggest your try looking
here
Be sure to remove the plug and do not use it again until you have had it looked at.
You are possibly within the five year parts g/tee but with Hotpoints’ labout at almost £90.00 you should be able to get it repaired for less than that.Re: Hotpoint TDC32 Tumble Dryer – help
Thanks for the quick reply. Yes I can revolve the drum without much effort.
It was working fine until yesterday, although occasionally it would stop heating in mid-cycle.. operating cold I guess. Turning it off and on again always resolved that.
As soon as I turn it on (press the on/off) it starts to buzz and nothing else happens… it doesn’t start to tumble although the timer still turns.
Any other thought would be appreciated. By the way, it’s only 2 years old.. are Hotpoint Tumble Dryers any good?

if drum turns without much effort its possible the belt is broken the buzzing noise is the belt pulley draging on the motor shaft remove mains lead remove top and see if you can see the belt around the drum if not then new belt is required not a diy job

How do you know it stopped heating in mid cycle ?? did you open the door? You should avoid stopping the machine in mid cycle unless in an emergency. You can and will cause premature thermostat failure by opening the door in mid cycle. In normal operation the temperature control stat will switch the heat on and off. you should not have to “turn it on and off”. Failing thermostats could cause intermittant heater failure.
If you can revolve the drum easily that could , as litlor suggests be a broken belt, and may account for the burning smell.

Just took a look, the belt looks fine… so it’s not that.
I know it stopped heating in mid-cycle because it would work for a while (you could feel the heat from outside), then it would just cool down and at the end of the cycle the clothes were cold and damp. This was never a persistent fault, you could always just run it again and the problem disappeared.
Assuming it’s a problem with the motor, and the dryer is about 2.5 years old (i.e. covered by Hotpoint’s 5 year parts guarantee) is it going to be cheaper to pay hotpoint the £90 or to get a local repairer?

The motor is around £45 inc VAT if it has failed, but I have to disagree slightly with iadom on the capacitor which it may well be. They can cause a burning smell if this happens to them (from the UK Whitegoods gallery):
It will be one or the other.

nice pic. 🙂 not seen one like that for a while. Lots of mains filters going that way though.
If the heat has been cutting off then you have two faults. On balance I would get a reliable local engineer to have a look. Motor failures are not that common on these machines.
