Jlwd1612 tripping RCD in consumer unit.
Its 5 years old and has had little use but has been fine up to this point.
Its tripped the RCD so unplugged it and the tripping stopped,
Removed the water in the machine as cloths stuck in it and then opened the door using the emergency release by the drain.
Removed cloths and then removed the trap at the bottom and washed it under the tap and replaced.
Plugged back in and still tripped so removed from power socket.
Removed back of machine for a visual check all looked good and clean and nothing obvious.
Pulled the leads of the heating element restored the power and still tripped, so removed power again.
Pushed all the connectors i could get to and plugged back in and hey presto no trip this time.
Put the machine on spin/rinse cycle door locked pump sounded for a short while, then the door lock clicked twice and it stopped.
Decided to put it in my car and look at home, plugged it into an extension lead did not connect any water to it, put it on spin/rinse and it done the whole cycle no problem.
Any ideas what’s going on as I’m concerned that if i simply return it to my parents home and it trips the RCD again they could be without power for some considerable time as they are not mobile and have carer’s in and out.
Any help or advice would be much appreciated

the 2 most common tripping problems are heaters and motor
you say you disconnected the heater but this is a washer dryer so has 2 heaters so which one did you disconnect ?

Hi dave sorry i did not realise,
it’s the one at the back of the machine at the bottom just to the left of the motor if you looking at it from the back of the machine,Also you say the motor causes tripping can i eliminate that as it done the spin cycle ok at my house on an extension lead, or am i just hoping…..

i assume you have a trip as well
if yes then it should trip in your house
has it tripped at yours ?

then without a trip connected you will never find the cause
all it proves is its not a dead short that will go bang, you have a slight leak to earth you have to find it

Ah ok dave thanks for that i understand what you are saying could i run it through an extension lead with a built in RCD to simulate it at my parents home?

Ok well I’ve now plugged it in with an RCD in line and on a 20 minute wash all is ok no tripping of the RCD.
So decided to put it on dryer and it trips after about 5 mins…
I’ve checked that element and seam to be getting a low reading of an leak to earth.
How easy is it to change that element please, and is there a guide to it at all.
Could i just unplug the element and isolate it and still just use the washing machine.

unplug element and isolate and machine should work fine
make sure wires are well sucured so cant rub through with vibration
