I’ve got a JLWM1407 (prod. no. 9145225150) that recently started grinding, so I bought bearings, bearing seal and tub seal. But…when I took the tub and drum out, it’s a sealed tub – no bolts, just melted plastic joining the two halves. The machine is over 10 years old, and that, plus the fact I was able to buy bearings and tub seal, made me think it would be repairable. UKwhitegoods has excellent articles bemoaning sealed tubs, and they really make machines hard to repair. Apart from giving up and junking a mostly working machine, has anyone got any advice for what to do?

there are all sorts of idiots on utube cutting these tubs open but in the end its not possible

you must have been unlucky as your machine lists a non sealed tub but only list a sealed one as a replacement.

at £184 its hardly worth it when you consider other components are also the same age

Yes, the thought of risking lots of water in a cut-and-shut tub just above a motor was not attractive. I wish there was a way to easily know how repairable stuff is when you buy it new – I would definitely favour a manufacturer that still did split tubs.

I would not necessarily recommend what follows. As far as known: Samsung, LG, Currys Logik, Haier, all the Turkish Vestel machines, Bush, Montpellier. So anything ( as far as is known ) that is Chinese, Korean, and Turkish Vestel machines have a dismantleable tank i.e. not a sealed tank.

Thanks – some of those might be ok. I’m running our old one into the ground at the moment – small loads and low revs, but we need to replace it soon. Cheers, Andy

Best of luck when that replacement time comes but be warned as there is a chance that the drum drop`eth before the belt pops off and the droopy drum cuts the front tank half = a bloody great flood. That typically happens when you least expect it. Of my little list a straight forward non gimmicky Lg is better built than all the others ( including the Bosch. The Vestel machines are not bad but I would not recommend them for the family man, Samsungs are very variable but are reasonable machines overall, Haier suffer from a lack of spare parts and possibily expensive ones at that ). BUT Lg, in my opinion, might have an increased chance of premature obsolete future parts ( whether under a right to repair ruling or not ) certainly when compared to the current Bosch WAN series – Bosch have the best after sales spares supply to date. If you do go for a Bosch as a replacement do your homework and double check and that is easy: go to Bosch uk spares and type in the model code and so long as the site is up to date pictures part numbers and prices will be found that will allow you too compare parts with other brands although most of the other brands yuse 3rd party spare companies to do the spare parts distrubution on their behalf and so the exercise can spiral in to a major undertaking – well, you don`t expect it to be that easy do you?

Thanks – I never thought the grinding might be the drum trying to make a break for it! I just thought the bearings would eventually seize up. We’ve identified a Bosch which is a Which? best buy at around £380, so we’ll probably order that this week. Most other options at that price point were Hotpoints, but we’ll give them a miss as I don’t want to have the fire brigade standing by every time I want to wash my boxers!
