Faulty Beko RCF582W Fridge Freezer

Hi all

I have a Beko RCF582W fridge freezer. It’s five years old, and has performed OK until recently.

First problem was that the freezer started going too cold (down to -30C), while the fridge wouldn’t go colder than +8C. After doing as much as I could myself (thorough defrosting, cleaning, vacuuming around the back) without success, I called a professional repairer, who told me on the phone that he knew exactly what was wrong. Repair would involve a ‘reset and regassing’, for which he quoted £145. He duly carried out this work, and things improved such that the unit is now running fine some of the time (-18C freezer and +4C fridge). However, there are long periods when the unit warms up far too much (to -2C in the freezer and +8C in the fridge), before cooling down again to the correct temperatures.

I called the repairer back and described to him what was happening. He said ‘it probably needs a new PCB’. He came out and fitted a new module and told me to let the fridge freezer settle down for a few days. It’s been three days now, and no improvement. I haven’t monitored this in any methodical way, but I noticed a couple of hours ago that the fan had stopped running, presumably the start of the defrost cycle. It’s now kicked back in almost exactly one hour later. Is this significant?

Thinking about this logically, it would that there’s a fault somewhere in the electronics that control the defrost cycle. Having searched around, I can’t find any references to a separate defrost timer, so presumably this is one of the functions of the PCB?

This is really getting on my nerves now – should I just call it a day and get a new fridge-freezer? That would be annoying after having spent so much money already, but I’m conscious that any further attempts at repair may be throwing good money after bad.
