I don’t usually repair cookers, but one of my regular customers asked me to connect up this 18 month old Beko electric cooker after a house move. The cooker had low electrical insulation resistance, which I traced to the hotplates.

The insulation resistance of the hotplates measured 2.0, 0.7, 0.5 and 0.2 megaohm respectively at 500 V DC test voltage. I isolated the 3 hotplates with below 1 megaohm insulation resistance so I could safely connect the cooker.

Is it common for this type of solid EGO hotplate to fail in this way so quickly and is this likely due to lack of regular use, as for certain washer dryer drying elements?

My customer is asking me to price up replacing maybe one or two of the faulty hotplates and I want to give best advice to avoid them failing again.

Also, should I be recommending replacing the the 2.0 megaohm hotplate now as well?
