Have a look on the Connect website at PMP3561, see if it looks like the right one. 🙂

Just to say thank you for your help with this one.

Customer decided not to repair machine, daughter giving him her old one, and buying a new one for herself. 😯 😯

    Well for her, good call!

There comes a time (and an old AWB088 is well passed it) when to save your business reputation against further agro, it’s best to say NO 😀

(Christ knows how it lasted so long anyway 😯 )

It can be difficult to persuade people to part with a trusty friend. 😉

Earlier today I went to a Hotpoint 18330, very early brown trim version of the purple 1850. It is around 26 years old. New backplate fitted over 10 years ago, since then a door seal, brushes and a sump hose. Physical condition is excellent apart from the motor bearings. The customer and her husband are both in their 80’s and even though I tried my best to tell them to invest in a new machine they insisted I do the repair, around £65 for armature & brushes. There is no doubt that this machine would have chugged along for a few more years but as I had used 5 armatures last week alone I didn’t have one with me.

I am glad to say that they rang me later and took my advice, I have passed them onto a local supplier who I work closely with and they are treating themsleves to a new machine. 8)

Dont think the new machine will last 26 years. 😥

Sad to say, I don’t think the customer will either, 😥

In this case I would have done the repair if they insisted, my judgement was that with luck it would still run for a few years, but even though the vitreous drum looks fine on the outside, I cannot see the inside condition, or know if the timer is going to fail soon. My feeling is that there are too many parts obsolete or soon to be so for this machine to be repaired. Had I done the repair and a major failure occured later, I would have refunded the cost of my repair. That is why I advised her to think about replacing the machine.
If I go to any machine, regardless of age that I do not consider fit for repair then no amount of pleading will get me to go ahead.

I know what you mean – all these old biddies who’ve still got PhilcoBendix machines thundering away, and they all say the same thing:
“I don’t want another one at my time of life, dear”.

And they won’t be told either. In a way, we fool ourselves with some of these old ones – little old ladies run them once a week for clothes, and an extra wash once a fortnight for bedding, so in real terms, they’ve done no work at all. By comparison our washer at home does three loads a day, every day. Being a semi-commercial, it doesn’t cause any problems, just as well, because I certainly can’t move it on my own. We’d have killed 4 cheapies off by now at least.

Still, it keeps you alert – went to an old boy two weeks back with an AWB081, spin problems and started the “It’s ancient, there’s no parts” spiel, then spotted the hand written instructions on the wall, from his wife before she went into hospital for the last time…….. I soldered up the broken joints on the module and left him happy.

    Funny old job sometimes.

    Chris.
