Whirlpool AWOD 5526 – noises and drum rotation problems

Hi,
Yesterday my old trusty (and rusty!) Whirlpool AWOD5526 machine started to make grinding noises when trying to rotate its drum. It also appears that the drum is only going one direction – clockwise and doesn’t go anti-clockwise.
No errors are shown on display.

Am I right to assume that the drum bearings are gone and needs to be replaced? From what I’ve heard, replacing bearings on this machine isn’t going to be an economical choice due to drum construction, is it right?
