My old broken dishwasher is built into the kitchen units and is hard wired into the mains.

I want to replace it, but none of the major retailers will do installation for a hard wired set up. So every time I have to get the dishwasher replaced I have to call out an electrician to wire it in.

I am thinking of getting the socket in the wall replaced so it can accept a regular plug (rather than the appliance being hardwired). That way, the new dishwasher can just be plugged in (without having to get an electrician to hardwire it in each time it needs to be replaced_.

If I do this, will the new dishwasher fit into the space (as the current old dishwasher is built into the kitchen units)? I am concerned that the plug might add extra width and so make it stick out.

if the spur box is behind the dishwasher then the height of a plug will stop the unit going in

there are 2 ways around this
1 get an electrician to move the unit to the back of an adjacent cupboard
2 get a short peice of 3 core flex at least 1.5mm. Then add a good quality trailing socket on the end. Be careful wiring the socket as the live and neutral connections are reversed. This socket can then sit under the adjacent cupboard
