electriccookerproblem
ParticipantHi,
I’m completely unlearned in electrics – forgive me for my ignorance and please try to make explanations very clear! Thanks so much in advance
My electric cooker/oven (one piece), its make being Statesman and model DELTA50W, has been tripping its RCD on our switchboard. When we turn any of the hobs on the cooker, the cooker/oven switches off and trips the RCD instantly (time taken to trip the RCD after turning on one of the hobs has varied slightly since resetting the RCD).
We got it secondhand, but I’m pretty certain it’s not more than a few years old, if that. It has done this before, but the problem went away by itself within a day or so. This time, the problem is not going away. Emergency electricians have told me that there’s a fault with the oven but nothing more.
My questions are: what could the fault be? How can I take apart the cooker to diagnose the problem more precisely? How much would it cost to repair the fault (by replacing parts, etc.) by myself? If parts have to be replaced, what parts are they and how do I replace them? I’ve read online from people with similar problems with electric cookers/ovens that there is an ‘earth leakage’ – what causes this and how can it be fixed? Considering the cost of repairs, would getting a new cooker/oven be worth it? Again, thanks very much in advance
Statesman DELTA50W specs: 230V 50Hz 7500W
Label on RCD in question on my switchboard: 80A 30mA [not sure if relevant]August 8, 2021 at 9:01 am #478408electrofix
Moderatoryou talk about turning on the hobs of the cooker but then talk about an oven
so what is causing the problem your hob or your oven ?Dave

ParticipantJust the cooker and its hobs. Oven is fine.

Moderatornow its getting confusing
from what i can see statesman Delta50w is a single cavity oven so has no hob
then you say its the “cooker and its hobs” which makes it sound like you have a second cooker which has a hob and an oven
so have you got a seperate hob built into the worksuface and a seperate oven either below it or in a seperate unit
or something else ?

ParticipantMy mistake (my understanding was that the hobs were the plates on top of the cooker that heat up when turned on). I just mean the cooker. That’s the correct model you have there–statesman delta50w with a single cavity oven and a cooker. It’s the appliance in the attached image. The four sealed plates on top are what I mean by cooker. Really sorry for not being clear

Moderatorwas ok could not find a pic
its described normally as a slot in cooker
you say the oven works ok but the hotplates trip the rcd. if they have not been wet then one of them is faulty. does it trip with any particular one ?

ParticipantIt’s all of the plates as of now. (From a few weeks ago until now, it was only one that would trip the RCD and we made do with using only the other three. At other points in the past, it would be any number that would cause the RCD to flip.)
They have been wet before; we had just cleaned them with water a short while before this present episode of tripping the RCD (I remember the manual saying not to clean them with water as we did, and reading online has shown me why, but mistakes happen). I doubt it (because it’s been a while since we applied the water among other reasons) and am more inclined to think it is a fault with the cooker parts as you say, but I’d be obliged if you could explain why at all the hotplates being wet might have something to do with it as we have felt that suspicion before

Moderatorwater can get inside the plates
last one i had like this was a man who steam cleaned one. I had to use a blowlamp to heat the rings to dry them out. you can use a heat gun as well if you have one
hair dryer may work but its not as hot so may take more timeDave

ParticipantThanks a lot. If it turns out that there is a fault with the plates themselves, what could be the cause and what part could be affected?

ParticipantHi, again thanks so much for your help. One of the hobs is now working, the others same problem as before. Which course of action should I now take: wait for the other hobs to start working again or consider trying to diagnosing the fault?

Moderatorgive it some time
we know the diagnosis, one or more rings have an earth fault. They will either dry out or have to be changedDave
