AEG Freezer Keeps buzzing

Out the blue the freezer stops feezing and buzzer sounds. This happens about every 2 days at the moment.

A suggestion about a year ago was that the ‘defrost’ is faulty – is there a method for testing this? The freezer has recently been defrosted.

I don’t mind changing the thermister if that is suggested but to change the control panel seems very expensive unless it is that for sure or can be returned if it proves not to be faulty.

Your thoughts and ideas are very welcome. If need be we will just have to get a new feezer.

Hi

Have you checked that the door is shitting fully and that the door is making contact with the door switch ?.

If not this may cause the appliance to over frost in the freezer and cause the alarm buzzer .

I’ll check this out – but there is no sign of over freezing. In fact to be safe we removed all contents a couple of days ago, wrapped them up, stored them all in a cool place and fully defrosted the feezer. Then after reaching -18C with fast freeze and less than 24 hours later it started buzzing again. To get things going we switched it off and on again at the mains.

Any other things to checks out would be welcome? I have fixed things safely for many years – radios, TVs, washing machines, fridges and hoovers, but this has stumped me for sure. I have plenty of tools and an electric meter to take readings if this could be useful. I just like fixing things I guess – especially if the item is only a few years old and seems otherwise and good shape.

The freezer is still intermittent so I’ve put a timer on the mains plug to force it off once a day for a few minutes – that seems to do the trick for now.

Hi Laurie,

There’s basically three choices here depending on the model, which you haven’t given us and the age of the machine, which you haven’t given us.

Thermostat/thermistor

PCB, if fitted but we’d need the model number to know that.

Compressor

The first, given the description is unlikely but remotely possible I guess.

The second is more likely but I’d be guessing without more info.

Given the description I’d plump for the third but, unless you happen to have refrigerant gas gear it’s not a DIY job. But, the age of the freezer would cast more light.

Using a timer to switch it off at the mains isn’t exactly ideal and, if the food inside isn’t stored correctly it could make you very ill. It should average at -18ËšC in a freezer or you have a problem and food will degrade quicker than it should.

Thanks for getting back on this one.
The problem started about 18 months ago and the suggestion then was to turn the freezer off at the mains for an hour. This worked fine and the freezer behaved well until about a month ago.
The timer I use only turns the freezer off for about 5 minutes each day and the door is not opened during this time and the temperature stays at -18 deg C.
But I’m sure the problem is still there as the freezer stops working now and again and we get it restarted before it drops more thatn a few degrees.
The details I have on the model are:
FS 18032 PNC 922203020 SN 32201667
My guess is that the Freezer is now about 5 years old and it seems a shame to replace it if it can be fixed.
Can you suggest any tests to check out the three items you mention? I have a good electric meters, plenty of tools and work only with items unplugged from the mains. But certainly no gear to deal with changing any fluids in the system. Once I’m certain what the problem is I’ll call in someone to fix it if it means dealing with the fluids rather than electronics/electrics.

It’s electronic and uses a probe to thermistor in the main cavity to read the temperature.

That narrows it to the PCB or the compressor.

PCB is about £69 plus VAT, probe is only a tenner.

Without knowing if the compressor is overheating and cutting out it’s hard to call it TBH but it would be, IMO, unusual for a PCB to cause that.

Many thanks for the suggestions. It seems best to go for the thermister first. I’ll check out the compressor but I’ve not noticed it overheating to date.

Where is the thermister and how is it best to replace it? There is a good local shop I can pop in to order the right part.

Had a closer look to try to seperate out the PCB from the compressor cauring the problem. I removed the power feed spade connector from the control panel lead feeding the hot sensor on the side of the compressor and as expected the compressor stopped immediately. On replacing the spade coneector the compressor would not start immediatly and a mains detector revealed no power leaving this heat sensor – that I guess is a simple bi-matallic switch?

After a minutes it decided to connect and the copmpressor started again. All the time the compressor was mearly warm, not hot.

Can you tell me who can supply this part, what is its proper name and part number?

Hi Laurie,

Yes, in essence, the compressor klixon is a simple bi-metallic switch. Heat on it and it cuts out as a safety device to prevent the compressor overheating. Or at least, that’s the plan.

TBH, it sounds as if that’s working as it should.

Please help me understand the point you make.

If I disconnect power from the ‘over heat’ sensor and then reconnect it, then if the compressor was not hot before this test, I thought it should just work as normal straightaway? In fact the compressor remained disconnected for a few minutes after reconnection.

Are you perhspd really saying that the fluid system needs recharging as it is probably causing the compressor to overheat and the sensor to operate? If this is the case I will call someone in to fix this problem. With my very limited knowledge I thought it best to change the ‘heat sensor’ first as this must be a far cheaper first try option.

The point is that it is a ludicrously simple device. There’s only two faults I’ve ever seen on a klixon, it ether falls apart or blows up so if neither apply then I’d be looking elsewhere.

TBH it sounds like a system or PCB failure.
