Thanks Dave.
I did what you suggested with partial success.
My wife had put a wash on during the day when the problem with the machine cutting out became known. After getting back home, this is what I did:
1. Tried to start the machine with no joy. Door locked as the machine stopped mid programme and won’t open.
2. Drained the drum from the emergency hose at the front.
3. Checked the drain pump for any blockages.
4. Successfully managed to run a spin cycle with the laundry in the drum.
5. Disconnected the drying element and covered all connectors and element terminals with tape.
6. Ran a 30 degrees test wash cycle which stopped after a couple of minutes.
7. Cancelled the programme and ran a cold wash cycle successfully.
8. Ran 30 degrees test wash cycle again, successfully this time.I’m hoping that I’ll get to do 2-3 wash cycles without problems tomorrow as the laundry has piled up.
E36 error code is still there after disconnecting the dryer element. So, it’ll give me problems sooner or later, I guess.
Anything else I can do resolve the E36 error code?
The washer/dryer is 10 years old and has not given me any problems apart from the same problem of the wash programme stopping after a couple of minutes about 5 years ago. The problem fixed itself when I used the dryer after a long time. The dryer doesn’t get used much. The machine has been used almost every other day in the last 5 years.

it could also be the wash heater but the connection will prob be a bit more difficult to access

Hi Dave,
If it involves taking the top and the back panel off, then it’s not a problem. Done it a couple of times now so it doesn’t take that long.
I checked the water temperature (by dipping my hand in the water in the drum) by interrupting the 2nd 30 degrees test cycle – which ran successfully. The water didn’t feel as cold as the tap water after running the cycle for 10 minutes.
This makes me think that the washer element is working.
I already know that the dryer element is working as I used the dryer for an hour after reconnecting the snapped wires to the temperature probe.
Will it help if I check both elements with a multi meter when I get back home tonight? What shall I be looking for in terms of values on the multi meter?
Thanks for all your help.

the element may be working but if its got leakage to earth it can fool the electronics
after disconnecting element you looking for a very high reading to earth something like 20 million ohms or above

Hi Dave,
Apologies for not getting back sooner…
I checked both dryer elements and the washer element for faults and they were all ok.
While I had the back cover off, I inspected the condenser unit and could see a fair bit of darkening along the length of the bottle. I disconnected the connector hose from the tub, pulled out the thermistor and decided to clean the fluff build up in the condenser unit.
While rinsing out the condenser, there was no fluff but lots of gray shards of limescale! After a good clean of the the hose, and the condenser, I realised that the dried glue like deposit on the thermistor (as mentioned in my previous post) was infact limescale buildup. A good rub of the thermistor on a piece of cloth soaked in vinegar got rid of the limescale deposit and it was shiny as new again.
I put the machine back together and also connected the dryer elements that I had disconnected to isolate the fault and ran a few washes and drying cycles without any problems.
The diagonistics now show error code E41 (which points to the door being open). The machine is running fine without any problems and no more E36 error code. I’ve (kind of) given up on locating and fixing the E41 door related fault.
If you (or anyone else) has any suggestions to fix it, I’ll be grateful for the knowledge.
I’m very thankful for all the help I have received through this forum and will return to report any further updates that I may have.
