I’m definitely one, (almost into the 67th year) 😯 suspect a few others are, unfortunately now some younger ones will have to work longer than 65.I appreciate I’m lucky to have the choice at 65.
I always thought I’d knock work on the head at 65 but when it arrived I couldn’t face sitting down or trying to occupy my time with something else, I would miss the contact as there is plenty of banter to be had with long standing customers especially in the catering trade. Usually only work mornings now and fine weather see’s me out on the bicycle pm,although there are 9 jobs on the list today, stopped all adverts but the phone keeps ringing.
Just renewed my F gas and was fitting pipe work in a new restaurant whilst builders were in.
Two guys working there hugging high density fibre boards about were obviously getting on but during some chat it turned out they were brothers , one 74 and the other 71, they would have put 21 year olds to shame :).
Lots of fully retired on an estate opposite me who march off to get the paper and then march back for a read, couldn’t do it myself
I think also that once you were out of the loop it would quickly affect, hands dexterity, general fitness etc and technically you soon drop behind.
We are all different for sure but I suspect a lot of the long term and busier posters on here might be thinking similarly.Re: Ageing Engineers

Make that two as I’m well into my 67th year and growing old disgracefully. Haven’t worked afternoons in decades. And only get out in the mornings after I’ve walked up the shop for the paper and read all I wish to read from it….works for me..! 😀

Coming up to 66 in November.
Many years ago I intended to retire at 60, but even at 65 I would really miss it if I knocked it on the head in one fell swoop.
I am an early bird TBH, just can’t lie in bed. On my first call at 7.30AM this morning. Only book between 6 and 8 calls maximum, last call on Mon/Tue/Thu is 4.00PM. I finish earlier Wed/Fri because they are two of my thrice weekly squash nights.
I am very lucky to be fit enough to do the job, five main bearing jobs this week. 8)
I like driving, I enjoy ‘fixing’ things and as above I have a vast pool of long term customers, 99{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of them are decent, friendly people. I can just tell the other 1{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} to take a hike.
I can now be very choosy about the work I do, the advent of sealed drums and cheap junk has caused a natural and steady decline in my workload but I haven’t advertised for over 30 years and have a large enough reservoir of machines to keep me ticking over.
As soon as I turned 65 I stopped all Saturday work and treated myself and the wife to season tickets at the Theatre of Dreams. 8)
I will allow the work to slowly dwindle away and don’t want to be too busy or I will get stung for the 40{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} tax rate. The amount they are already taking out of my pensions is annoying to say the least. 😥
I have seen so many older relatives and friends go downhill fast and vegitate when they have had to stop work.
If I had been sat at the same desk or stood at the same counter or workbench for 50 years then I would no doubt think differently.
Thankfully I don’t have to carry on working for financial reasons, I genuinely want to for a little while yet. 🙂
I look on it now as a hobby, not a job. 😉

Generations since yours have got used to this, the days of leaving school on friday and starting work in your parents factory on the following Mondau have ceased.
A job for life ended long time for many.
A lot of white goods peeps have come from various jobs before and leave to other more lucrative forms of slave labour.
This topic gave me an idea i’d like to suggest.
A blog or something here.
You guys obviously have a wealth of experience and l for one would enjoy reading about the industry over the past few decades.

Over the years here on UKW us old duffers have waxed lyrical many a while back to the times when men were men and women did all the washing on a Monday (happy days?)

I certainly wouldn’t want to be a youngster starting out in this profession.
When I started with HOTPOINT in the mid eighties it was a great job to do, the service they offered was second to none in my opinion. I could see it starting to go downhill in the mid nineties which is when I decided to go self employed

When I was doing apprenticeship as a Marine Engineer I was posted to Falmouth dockyard for six weeks.
An old cargo ship came in that was on its final run to the scrapyards in India.A real rust bucket literally falling apart.
Run by a Swedish company that specialised in taking a final low value cargo to pay for the trip.
Manned by a minimal crew the average age was 74, Captain and Chief Engineer in their mid eighties and the youngest member was 68
All were single or had no dependent family
Logic was that if the ship should get into trouble and sink the compensation payouts would be minimal ❗
