Send some over to me please aqualectric… 😉 I too love intergrated machines, you can charge more for repairing built in too! I advertise myself as a built in specialist, I have repaired built in stuff for about 15 years or so now, and like you say, a repair is usualy always cheeper than a replacement. Even bearing jobs have a chance!

I usualy charge £25 inc vat plus parts for freestanding an £35 inc vat plus parts for built in but it can vary, ie. bearing jobs or Neff built in dishwasher heater unit/motor etc.

That’s madness imo. I have a friend who’s recently stopped working and we wondered why because he had tons of work. We found out why he was always busy and why he’d burnt himself out… he was doing jobs fo £20 here and £30 there, including parts! 😯
I have a bottom line of £40 plus parts, the only exception to this is if it’s very local or an OAP and the job is a walk in and walk out. That of course does depend on individual circumstances and is at my own discretion.
Back on topic, work has started to really pick up in the last month or so an it seems to be getting busier. (fingers crossed).

Definately is feast & famine at mo.. Phone hardly rung last week, then i take 6 decent sounding calls today 😯 oh well musnt grumble.
Re charging different rates for built in, generally i think you’ve got to. Its fine if the floors flat, the thing isnt up on 17 different bits of wood etc, etc, but how often is life that simple?
Totally agree with comments about £25.. bonkers.. You will get more grief the cheaper you are, its just human nature.

We are £43.00 a job and range between £48 and £55 for integrated calculated on the ‘hassle factor sliding scale’. Being cheap does not IMO get you more work, quite the opposite. Like Miele that have that certain unspoken ‘quality’ in the public eye due to their market position, by charging bargain basement rates you may in essence be branding yourself as an Indesit. (Hope you see the analogy). No disrespect intended – but it has taken me 12 years of self employment to learn this. 😉 Giving a higher level of service that is not expected by the customer from “today’s tradesmen” (thanks to newspapers and T.V.) you can break the typecast we are tarred with and get the recommendations. The work will duly follow.
Chris is right – all machines are a variation on a theme; the trick is not to panic but be prepared to repair any make. As long as you can source the bits, there is little to stop you.
And if you get in the proverbial, then the UKW guys will help!!!
Been there, got the ‘T’ shirt mate, stick at it, you’ll be fine.:DSteve.

in the north east private work has been quite quiet for the past couple of weeks,on built ins we charge £40+vat+parts but if it is not installed correctly ie on bits of wood or bricks etc we will pull it out and repair but as to getting it back we make it clear that we are repairmen not kitchen fitters or in some cases magicians but we will try to get it near as damn it.learnt my lesson years ago when i was there 1 hour trying to align b/in d/w on wood and all kinds.

Are your prices typical for the area you work in?May 5, 2008 at 7:05 pm #251035silverbroom

Up here in the glens I charge £38 freestanding £45 integrated however this very much depends on journey time up one glen and down can be a long way so I will charge in relation to journey time.
I know this does not relate to you city types but that’s my pennys worth.

I wonder why some of you guys charge different rates between freestanding appliances and built-in? Isn’t it easier and fairer to have one fixed charge and an hourly rate?
After all it’s often the time factor that needs to be covered not the degree of difficulty. Some seemingly ‘free-standing’ appliances can be just as difficult to access and take the same amount of time as the most awkward built-in jobs.

In my experience Built in products are seen by the customer as a premium product therefore they (the custome )are prepared to pay a premium rate .
Which is why I write of fewer built in’s than freestands on costMartin wrote:After all it’s often the time factor that needs to be covered not the degree of difficulty. But on the whole freestanding machines are more straight forward.yes you get the odd one that is plumbed incorrectly or you need to treat the floor with kid gloves but that is all taken into account with the labour charge .
