Thanks for your lengthy reply, K! 🙂
Re: Borax, it’s actually a “Borax Substitute” (Sodium Sesquicarbonate) because it’s not very easy to buy Borax itself (something to do with non-food grade Borax being used in Chinese cooking, iirc).
So I realise you might have doubts about how effective my washing solution is, but my son seemed to have a particular sensitivity to detergents and got patches of red/itchy skin where the edges of clothes made contact and rubbed. And once we went to soap, he was OK and in general, his skin improved.
*However*, all that aside, can you please give me a simple Yes or No answer regarding the 10 year guarantee with the ISE machine. I want to be 100{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} sure that using a non-detergent mix like the soap flakes etc will have *any* effect on the validity of the guarantee. 🙂 I’m very much inclined to buy one, but it would be a disaster to pay this much for the machine, and then have yourselves tell me that the guarantee didn’t cover it if using other than detergent, iyswim! 😀
Thanks!

Hi Rachel,
It’s actually a hard question to answer and, would be for any manufacturer I expect.
The short answer is that if the machines aren’t used in the recommended manner then generally any warranty won’t cover the effects. Think on like someone using some sort of home brewed fuel in a car, the car manufacturer would disown it as it hasn’t been used in accordance with the instructions and the same goes for pretty much anything else.
The problem that it presents is in the “unknown”. Like the manufacturer won’t know what’s being used, what dosages are being used, what variants of the chemicals are used, what the long terms effects could or will will be…
See what I mean?
In practice, so long as there is no detrimental damage to the machine caused by the detergents/chemicals being used then it is unlikely to affect the warranty at all.
However, I would stress that if we don’t know what it could cause then it’s highly likely nobody can say for sure but if ill effects of the use caused damage (just like the car example or any others) it is probably not going to be covered by warranty. On the other hand, it may not do any harm at all, I really don’t know what the effects will be over time but most of the machines we see used this way do suffer from bacteria build up inside the tank, it is fairly common where conventional detergents are not used.
What I do know is that the cleaning process using what you are using is not what is tested or recommended by all major manufacturers.

Hi
I have been suffering with this problem for almost 2 years. I rented a flat and the appliance was dodgy from the start. The door was filled with residue and mould. However after loads of hot washes and detergent I came to this website. I realise it is not hygienic and especially with kids it makes it worse to have clothes stinking after a wash. I realised that I had a blocked waste pipe. It is worth cleaning or replacing this as my waste pipe was absolutely filthy. You have to run warm water through it and shake it violently until all the debris loosens or try placing it in a bath with some soap liquid to help loosen the debris. I was horrified and shocked to find so much filth which explains the horrid smell from the Bosch exxcel 1200. -
