Whirlpool are just as guilty; if you want to put this back on topic?
They’ve sold millions of Crosslee dryers over the years. Take the lollipop element as an example. Dave flogs this to the public for £19.53. The Whirlpool list price is £68.60…… plus VAT. You can buy it through your wholseale of choice for about £4.50.
Now THAT is profiteering!

We do so enjoy dramatic fluctuations in prices of genuine parts across a wide spectrum of appliances and their manufacturers. And make our own decisions as to how much mark-up we want to charge factoring the many varying circumstances, guarantees we wish to give etc.
I’m ever grateful of making an honest living from the opportunity of purchasing fast turnover spares at bargain prices knowing that even sticking (say?) 100{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} on the cost will still be way under what the manufacturer charges.
Each to their own I suppose. 😀
Damien Hirst has only to nail a £4.50 Crosslee element on the wall of the Tate Gallery, call it art and put a price tag of £30,000 on it and have no problems selling it. 😉

A little bird told me recently that the ‘in house’ cost of Hotpoint/Indesit drum lifters is £0.25.
List price around £13 ex vat. 😯

Maybe true but the selling price to the sheds was £100 in 2002 – so most of markup is due to curry’s comet etc

Just been to a Prochef oven. 2 hinges £71. Customer has to have them but no mark up for me but they look like early MFI hinges from the late 80s and probably worth about £2

I often fit pattern fan oven elements, and charge £55 – £60. inc fitting, nice earner for me, and a cheap job for the customer. HOWEVER I dont tell the customer that it is a pattern part. SO the question is ‘ Should I ?’
I could offer the customer the choice of pattern or genuine parts, and charge accordingly, but that would mean doubling up on the van stock.
Most people I find just care about the bottom line. The same reasons they buy the cheapest washer.

As a rule Spanner I charge 24.99 + vat for a fan element no matter if genuine or pattern on the cheaper branded ovens, if its a De Dietrich or SMEG etc then its a case of checking the prices as genuine fan elements are ridiculous prices so I give the customer the choice, mark up included of course 😉

As Chris says Whirlpool are one of the worst for over charging on spares.
I just wonder how many lost element sales Bosch have had on this particular part with the consequence of the dryer being scrapped way before the end of its useful life.
I am suprised insurance companies are not looking closer at this sort of thing as it is often them that has to pick up the bill.
I guess they put up their premiums to suite. Crazy world 😕
Fair play to Silverbroom for holding his hands up and no problems for going off topic, its an old topic anyway but still annoys me like hell 👿Graham

Cooling fan to fit a Bosch HBN3250GB/04 (Part No: 140210) comes out at a staggering £102.90 retail. 😯
Pattern equivalent from Masterpart though a more respectable and realistic price of just £8.99 (trade) 😀 (With a modest 25{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} markup that retails for £24 all told)

Just looked at the retail price of a timer for a creda 377754 condenser drier just one of those white ones with two switches -one for the motor and one for the heater they retail about £50.Its similar to the white knight one and-a little bird at Crosslee told me they buy them in at less than £1.To be realistic Ive to quote the customer £80 fitted, knowing that they wont – just another BER.
With popular parts they usually keep the price fairly low because they know the pattern spares guys are waiting in the wings eg drum support and bearings for hotpoint WM still coming to us at about £20.
As for Whirlpool they and their problems are their own fault,if you treat your customers with contempt it will come back to bite you.Ludicrously priced spares, poorly made washers, over designed ovens -the market decides, serves them right.

My maths isn’t brilliant but…………….

No, Martin’s math is correct. 😉
Fan motor: £8.99
Knowing where to get it: £5
Knowing how that it will fit it: £5
Markup: £6
Fitting it: £30-£50 depending on what you can get away with.
Seems fair to me even if I think he’s fairly cheap. 😉
Thing is, they’re not all like that and you have to make on the good jobs to pay for the ones that are either horrid or go horribly wrong.

Same/Similar kind of crap happened to me.
Looked up price for cooker clock on connect, gave customer price, she rang baumatic and was quoted half the price. So i printed out my suppliers price/page and showed her it.
Told her to order clock herself off baumatic and i fitted for £30.
Shes now happy i wasnt trying to pull the wool.
