ParticipantI have a Bosch Exxcel SGS43E02GB/43.
In the past I have had to replace the electronic controller (about 2 years ago).
Recently the arms were getting very clogged up with scale. So on Thursday night I gave it a very thorough clean and then poured vinegar into it and left it to soak. I set the timer to come on at 4am. When I got up the dishes were clean there was not sign of scale and the dishwasher looked nice and clean inside. On the Friday it was used at least once perhaps twice in the day. On Friday night I set up the dishwasher in the same way. When I came down at 7am it was reading 1 minute to go and swooshing away inside (i.e. it had been running for 3 hours or more). I switched it off. The dishes were clean but the water was cold. I have tried resetting the machine and letting it wash but after 15 mins or so the water seems to remain cold.
I have read elsewhere that the heater and some of the control electronics do have a tendancy to go wrong. But before I take it all apart or even order another new controller I wondered if there may be an issue due to my recent descaling.
I looked into the drain in the centre of the machine and it was full of bits of scale and very dirty. I have cleaned this out and run the machine for a short while, then pressed reset to drain. It washes (in cold) fine and drains fine.
So what do you advise I do next?
Thanks,

Yours is one of the later machines, so the burnt-out joints on the pcb are not a regular problem. However, underfilling is – especially in view of your “scale” comments.
Remove plug, lid, door outer, side panels and lower cover plate.
Clean the hose shown in the second picture thoroughly:
Then dismantle and thoroughly clean the water level control shown in the first picture. On the right hand side, check the heater for resistance with your test meter – 25-30 ohms is acceptable. Its the plastic box next to the circulation pump.

If you are not familiar with the use of a multimeter then it’s engineer time i’m afraid….it may be dry joints on the pcb which can be checked visually, but it may be the heater has failed 😕
Incidentally, the 1 minute display is actually a fault code meaning the water hasn’t reached a particular temperature within a given time.
If you have a look at the pcb in the door first the dry joints will be obvious by the burning around them, other that that it’s a case of testing the element for a good circuit.

Wow – thanks for the fast replies. Which is more likely the PCB or cleaining all the tubes?

Neither, more likely the heater i’m afraid 😕

OK – I have checked the PCB – looks fine.I have cleaned out the hose and the water level control. The float was stuck down in scale. Have reassembled and started running the auto programme. After 25 minutes I have opened the dw and the water is still cold.
Therefore I assume it is the heating element.
I have re-opened the dw and located the heating element (towards the back on the rhs?). It has lots terminals going into it. So which ones do I test for resistance?

The two wires going to the “rods” sticking out of the box are the ones to look for. Break the circuit and test for a reading of 20-30 ohms. Power off first……

Do I need to unplug all the wires or just the two main ones?

Just one of the two will split the circuit. This will avoid a back reading through the rest of the machines circuits.

That’s what I feared, so thanks for that.
Unfortunately I had to tidy the kitchen up, so measurement will have to wait until later in the week or next weekend. 🙁
Thanks for all the help – very much appreciated.

ParticipantOK – it’s confirmed that the heater is bust. I’m about to place an order for the spare.
Two questions:
1. How do I get access to replace it? Is it a turn the machine upside down job? If so, is it pretty obvious?
2. Did I cause this by leaving vinegar in it all night to get rid of the scale?
Thanks,

OK – the part has arrived. Looks straightforward to attach if only I could get access to it.
Can anyone confirm, is this a turn the machine upside down job and remove the base or do I have to access the heater in some other way?
Thanks in advance,

As a general rule, don’t invert appliances!
make sure you drain EVERYTHING first, if tipping/inverting it.
sorry, i’m not an engineer, so I can’t be more specific….but this will give you a “bump” anyway 😀 -
