ParticipantNeeded an upright hoover for a halloween prop (the wife wouldn’t ride a broom) so thanks to freecycle and a mix up with collecting I ended up with 2 dodgy vacuums. first was a “Hitachi Power House 1300 CV-785DC Exclusive” the second was a “Hoover Dust Manager Cyclone 1900w DM4493 001” It wasn’t hard to see that the Hoover would never be usable again so I set about striping it to make it lighter (it is labelled as extra lightweight 😯 but weighs more than our old dyson) The word that came to mind was flimsy. everything felt like it would snap and some things had. Compared to the Hitachi and my sons LG hoover that cost £40 5 years ago and is still going strong the quality was dreadful. Looking up the price of it in the Internet reviled it cost approx £168 new 😯 talk about paying for a name. Oh and the Hitachi, with a bit of TLC it is ready to be passed onto a new owner fully working.

There is a very old OU programme which was part of a design module, and looked at the design of vacuum cleaners. They were working specifically with Electrolux. Quite fascinating how the (working) prototype design was reprocessed and you could watch the computer modifying the design by removing plastic structure until it reached the production standard.
I can only assume that these standards have ben progressively “shaved” over the years to maintain pricing points.

ParticipantWell it seams to prove the statement “you get what you pay for” wrong in this case

Why? They all make stuff in order to make money. Given that the sheds are constantly turning the screws on the manufacurers for ever tighter margins, the only mugs are the public who will simply buy on price.
Then come on here and moan about it…….. 😀

ParticipantTrue but in this case the cheaper machine was better made in the case of the Hitachi and the LG

Aaah – but would the CADCAM computer agree? You pays the money and takes your choice.
Obviously a non-European manufacturer will have lower overheads in as much as they don’t need to pay their people very much. The price of plastic is pretty much constant the world over, because it’s a commodity.
So – you have a possibility of buying a better design, manufactured for a lower cost. Pure fluke if the buying public twig. They’re either cost obsessed because it’s “only” a vacuum cleaner, or they go the other way and buy expensive.
Dyson gets away with this as they will not sell a budget product and market it very well – people like the science and the clever British designer, but there are major questions over the science and the clever Briton makes the things in Malaysia, where you don’t have to pay people very much… And the plastic still breaks and the drive motors explode when the carbon brushes wear out.
SEBO in the meantime make a nice simple solid machine which works very well and the people who bother to do their research buy them.
Take your pick.
‘Night Ratty, I’m off to bed.

Madrat,
An old Dyson would be good with the motor removed, very light weight then! The plastic casing and other bits and bobs weigh hardly anything!
😆

That makes this machine the only Hoover cleaner that’s worth stealing!! (for the stickers and black cat that is) You’ve doubled it’s value as it was no good for the job it was originally designed for. :snig:
Joking apart – great idea; should turn some heads!!
