I have a huge number of households around me, probably 50,000 within easy reach, thats houses not people, so yes I have a huge advantage to engineers in rural areas, and to be truthful would probably be banging me head against the wall now as well if I lived in a less densly populated area.
If you do a website read up a little bit on whats called seo especially local seo for your website.
In Mikes case, his ideal website would reflect what local people would be tapping into google ie. washing machine repair penzance
Its not difficult over a couple of weeks/months to get to the top of google for this kind of local search result, and thats when the enquires will begin to roll in.
Good luck
Let me know if I can help with any aspects of web and local seo
Neil

Thanks Neil. Had a look at your link. Bit more sophisticated than what I have in mind. And this gave me a laugh:
“we carry out many repairs for some of the biggest electrical companies in the country, names that we all know and trust, such as Curry’s, Argos and many more.” 😆
Then the video panel not only displayed a totally pointless (to my way of thinking) 2’19” clip of hyper self-praise which gave the customer absolutely no useful information whatsoever and risked boring them into ditching the site, it also gave the customer a link to any number of U-tube related clips about how to do their own repairs! 😆
I think your own site is a much better example of how to do it. (That’s putting myself in the customer’s shoes but I’m not exactly a typical customer, I suppose.)

I started about 1997 and have always been just a sole trader working from home. When I started there was a lot more competition but most of the others have moved into other types of business over the years. One bloke who had a shop selling recon. appliances makes and fits blinds, another pair of brothers now do joinery and building, others have retired.
My own intention is to retire abroad, although I’m only 50. Both my parents died within the last couple of years and I inherit a half share of their house, which is now up for sale. The current plan is to buy a cheap house in Hungary to live in, rent out my cottage in Scotland, buy an additional property in Germany as a buy-to-let and use the 2 lots of rental income to live on. Hungary has warmer weather and lower cost of living than UK.January 27, 2011 at 9:34 am #342477happycack

quieter the last three weeks ,we normally book on average 45-50 fresh calls a week (there are two of us ,we only do private work ) but the last three weeks have been 28 calls,32 calls and and so far this week 26 calls ,nice to have a bit more time to myself at the moment though and be able to take the dogs out in the daylight 🙂 happens every year between jan and june though in my experience ,theres always a couple of crap months ,but never the same ones ,chin up it evens itself out during the year 😉

Sounds like quite a big turn-over. What areas do you cover?

based in the midlands nr Derby cover about a twenty mile radius from our base ,quite lucky really that there are a lot of households in our condensed area ,helps that we have been running for about 25 years though and have managed to build up a good customer base 🙂

KeymasterRe: Busy or what??
we on average do 40-45 calls a day, the last couple of months we were booking nearly a week in advance, yet at the moment we are doing calls as they come in, all the engineers are going out with a full day its just harder to get them booked up , 😥
