If there is anyone from CONNECT DISTRIBUTION SERVICES LTD reading the posts on this site, perhaps you can explain to us why you charge £6.00 carriage on all electronic orders under £65.00 (before VAT) whilst SEME (now SEME NEDIS) will send an electronic order FREE if it is only £12.00 or more (before VAT).

This is a huge difference in the Free carriage threshold, considering that both use the SAME CARRIER. If SEME can send out a parcel on these terms and make a profit, then HOW MUCH PROFIT is Connect making on the carriage charge?

Connect cannot even plead that Seme’s spares prices are dearer because in most cases they are cheaper!!

Even if your order is under £12 SEME will only charge you £2.99 carriage.

Just thought I’d ask! – Andy

Re: Carriage charges for spares delivery

This is why I stopped using Connect as my main supplier.

A few years ago, they were charging p&p when backed ordered items were sent out despite the fact that I was being charged p&p on the orginal order.

On some orders I was getting charged three or four times for p&p if items were out of stock!!! 👿

Whilst I can see the problem I have to say that all suppliers have minimum order values to get free delivery, we just dont pay delivery charges on any orders, we wait for the minimum value to be reached.

Its easier the more contract work you do, of course!

my biggest gripe regarding carriage charges is with MFI, even for their warranty jobs we have to pay £4.90 regardless of the amount and we cannot keep floating orders for too long as we get a complaint fax if a customer kicks up a fuss. We do make a small mark up on theparts but this is easily swallowed up by carriage charges.
As for SEME yes it is only £12, whats more you can order up to 5pm and still get your box the next day.

I have the same gripe ,And its not a high volume contract so there is no point in bulking out the order with fast moving stuff either

Yes, I like Seme, I wish I could use them more but such a lot of quite common parts are on special order so I often end up getting the whole lot somewhere else. At least you know with Seme that you are paying the same as everyone else as the prices are on the CD. With Homespares I was once given the wrong price list by mistake and was amazed how much cheaper the stuff is for their bigger customers.

Yeah and Dave has so often offered to do bulk buys for the subscribers…

Re: Carriage charges for spares delivery

Over the years I have used quite a lots of different spares suppliers the worst being a firm in Liverpool. The best firm I have ever dealt with is without a doubt SEME. I am not saying they are perfect because they have not been supplying white goods spares for very long and as Phidom remarked some stuff that you might get from say Connect is a special order off SEME. However this situation is improving day by day as they learn what WE – (NOT WHAT THEIR SUPPLIERS WANT THEM TO BELIEVE) require.

The reason I emphasise this distinction is because it was evident when SEME released their White goods catalogue that a fair proportion of the spares were out of date stuff that they probably woul’nt shift in a million years. Their suppliers were obviously offloading stock off there own shelves and getting away with it because SEME were ‘green’ in this area.

My only other problem with SEME is their database (as on the SALI DVD). There is a drastic shortage of cross referencing between parts and the model numbers that they will fit.

For example do a search for a hinge to fit a particular model of Hoover – no hinge is listed – search for a different model and up pops the hinge in the list of parts available. SEME if you are reading this, this really needs sorting IT IS LOSING YOU ORDERS! This is workroundable (a new word i’ve just invented) to some extent if you know other model No’s in the range but it is a pain in the bum and wastes time searching! Most parts in Connect’s database have a list of models that they will fit.

On the positive side I have found SEME faultless for customer care. Their white goods managers are superb and could not be more helpful, and their ears are always open to suggestions from you guys that need the bits and pieces. You can order up to 5PM for next day delivery and 49 times out of 50 it wiil turn up.

If this sounds like a plug for SEME well it probably is, but this firm is really trying hard and I believe that they deserve our support. I mean £12 carriage threshold!! they can’t be making much, if any profit on a deal like that, can they? When I order from them I always try to make it as big as possible to help their carriage / profit ratio, but its great when you need a spare quickly without doubling its price by adding £6 carriage.

Forgot to say – I have never been charged carriage by Seme on any backordered item that was on an original order over £12

    Seme

I started using Seme because they are the main spares source for certain makes of microwave. I therefore tend to try them first for microwave stuff. It’s OK if the item you want is listed but If you phone to enquire about a part number you wait a few days minimum for an answer. Usually, by the time they tell me the part number I have sourced the part elsewhere and completed the repair 🙄

Do you get much microwave work nowadays Phidom? I have a buddy who repairs microwave ovens and his work has all but dried up due to the low prices in the shops. Any work he picks up is mainly commercial repairs and some sales.

Re: Carriage charges for spares delivery

I used to repair microwaves, but about 8 years ago arrived at the conclusion “What is the point?” A recent visit to Morrisons found me lost amongst the aisles and looking (apart from the way out) at a pile of boxes marked £27.50 – unknown microwave ovens. And Morrisons are making a profit…..

First one I ever saw was in Canada in 1973 – a monstrous Tappan that apparently cost $2000! I suppose the fact that it took 25 years to totally devalue the market is some small compensation.

No, I don’t do many now Andy but I still repair a few for the local auction house who buy pallet loads of catalogue return stuff.
