KeymasterRe: Flame Failure Device
I’m not so much worried about one person messing about so long as they know what they’re doing or, are prepared to accept the risks involved.
I am however deeply concerned about the many hundreds of people that will quite likely read this thread over time. For them, the message has to be made very clear.
Gas goes to the FSD when the oven is on, yes. Do you know absolutely, 100{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} for sure that the main gas valve is sound?
The only way to be sure is either to drop test or to pressure test. I’ll go out on a limb and assume you have either not done that or, can’t.
I do commend you on taking onboard the advice given though, I wasn’t trying to ignore or belittle it. It’s the only way to ensure that the cooker is safe.

Although the articles you posted, 2 are the exact same event and that was an old guy that simply left his cooker on when not lit, the last one was a guy actually fitting something to the mains supply.
What i was talking about fitting would surely only have gas going to it when the oven is actually turned on, so saying the kitchen could fill with gas over night is a bit over the top.
Taking a part out of the FFD is not looking as good as I first thought, although I am sure it will work there is a far greater chance that it could leak.
The cooker is at the moment not connected to the gas supply.
The pipe going to the oven is just hanging loose as the FFd and oven jets have been removed.
I’m sure it should be safe to connect the cooker back up to use the hob burners and grill with the pipe just hanging open, as long as the oven is not used, I will remove the knob so it isn’t turned on by accident.
I will wait until I have the correct part and get somone to fit it.
Your above post prove’s you dont know the slightest thing about the reg’s for example under no circumstances must a gas pipe be left open unattended for a start. It really doe’s p me off that I have to go to the trouble of having to be gas safe every five years when people like yourself think its all just b0ll0cks and so have a go themselves risking family and nieghbours just to save £50-£80 pound but think nothing about spending thousands on a new car for example 😡 .October 23, 2012 at 10:51 pm #383464ibcus

I haven’t done any test on the cooker, i don’t have the equipment to test it.
I can only assume it is working fine, otherwise gas would have been leaking from it until I disconnected it today, and the guy that serviced the central heating 2 months back would (should) have noticed a drop in pressure.

This thread, so far, is quite unique to the UK Whitegoods forums in that it is the first account we have here of someone trying to bodge a gas appliance simply just to get it working again. The first direct proof that DIYers will resort to any length to achieve their aims no matter how foolish, irresponsible and reckless their actions may be. Though in fairness to the OP ( Mr ibcus ) his logical thoughts lead him to believe that it was not impossible to bypass the FFD, he felt compelled to seek advice from experts in the field.
I get the distinct impression the advice NOT to tamper with was heeded by Mr ibcus and likely as not he will source the correct replacement part before proceeding any further with this. ( with tongue in cheek ) 😉
Nevertheless this thread proves how easy it is for amateur DIYers to obtain these potentially dangerous components and mess and modify them to suit their own, often misguided ways. The only redeeming factor here is that events like this are rare in the extreme. Long may that be the case.

If your children started playing with the cooker knobs or you leant on the cooker knobs and accidentally turned one of them on, the FFD is designed to stop the gas because there is no flame there.
Imagine the situation if this scenario was the case yet there was no FFD fitted or it had been tampered with… gas could fill the room, and if undetected, would only need a light swith or something similar to ignite it, causing catostphic results.
A very small gas leak that is in the correct position could take down a whole row of houses.

Guys
IMHO your wasting your time on trying to explain why the law is the law here.
Unless we agree he is right and on that basis advise the OP on how to do what he wants to achieve, he clearly isnt interested.
Let him do it his way, he clearly knows better than us whom spend thousands on the training and certification, not to mention the years gaining the experience to be safe in the industry.
All we can hope for is its his family being blown up and killed rather than somebody else; it will be his concious after all, and then with a bit of luck we can go to Court when he is on a manslaughter charge and tell the court we told him so.
Some people just don’t want to listen, the OP is one of them. We have better things to do and can help people whom really want the help.
ibcus wrote:How long have ovens been fitted with FFD’s?
Did they explode regularly before they fitted them?
When there are comments like this, it makes you wonder, so why not compare it this an AirBag on a car, Only recently has the law required them to be fitted and in answer to the second part, yes, loads more people died in accidents before they were fitted, thats why the government stepped in to force ALL car manufacturers to fit them.

You clearly haven’t read all my posts, have you?
Or are you just cherry picking so you can get some of that chip off your shoulder?ibcus wrote:I do understand what you are saying kwatt and I do understand that gas is very dangerous.

You really are not a very nice person, are you.
You would want it take out my whole family and not just me?
Now that would be teaching me a lesson, wouldn’t it?Jackal wrote:

It would seem your ‘thousands on the training and certification’ didn’t teach you to read everything before jumping in with both feet.

Ouch!…bit extreme and somewhat overreactive response from you there Carl if you don’t mind me saying? I suspect you too may not have fully read into all ibcus has written. Though I’ve no wish to stand here and make comment on his behalf, many that have posted comments have clearly ‘read too much into what ibcus has said’ overall.

I dont think so Martin, the OP came on and posted a perfectly reasonable request for help and four of us gave him a perfectly reasonable answer advising him on safety issues not to attempt to do what he was doing.
The OP not getting the answer he wants then wanted to engage in an argument to try to justify his reasoning during which it became undeniable clear that he hasnt got the first clue what he is doing and by continuing against our advise he proved he was dangerous.
Martin would you like this unqualified, inexperienced cowboy of a guy, playing with and attempting to bypass the safety devices on his gas unit living next to you, after all if it goes tits up, it might by you and or your family in the hospital or morgue. If the answer to that is yes, I hope some day you get what’s coming to you.
To the original OP.
I read it, I realised what you said, I just don’t believe you for one second. If you really wanted to take our advise you wouldn’t have carried on the argument and tried to justify yourself. its easy coming on here saying your gonna do something but your attitude is you know best, so just say what you want to shut us up, after all who is going to know after all.
And yes I hope if something went wrong when you have played about with something you know nothing about and ignored advise you asked for because you no knowing about it, that the victims of your bloody minded attitude were no one else but YOUR loved ones, why should anyone else’s have to suffer. You shouldn’t be allowed the easy way out in such a circumstance and you should be made to live with your conscious as a result.

I bet you’re a barrel of laughs in the canteen.
What exactly did I carry on with?
Do I care if you believe me or not?
Strangely, no, I don’t.
I’m pretty glad I don’t live next door to you to be honest.
What argument did I try to engage in, I would love to know.
You really are a bloody minded so and so, wanting more people to get blown up now.

We dont have a canteen, my staff prefer other, better quality establishments than your obviously used to and those that know me on here know my humour.

Trying to find out how to get your original question answered, despite several of us advising otherwise and not letting go of it when you realise your in the wrong.
ibcus wrote:Do I care if you believe me or not?

If you already knew the answer then why ask the question, sorry but you seem to have a habit of that when the answer doesn’t you or your requirements, silly me I forgot that.
ibcus wrote:I’m pretty glad I don’t live next door to you to be honest.
That really is mutual and to be honest I feel a whole lot safer as a result!
ibcus wrote:What argument did I try to engage in, I would love to know.
It is so blindingly obvious I would explain it all to you but your clearly too thick to understand, as your demonstrating now, and it would end up being years of my life I wouldn’t get back.
ibcus wrote:You really are a bloody minded so and so, wanting more people to get blown up now.
Yes I am bloody minded about safety and I make no bones about it and I don’t want more people blown up, just those close to you, if your stupid enough to ignore the advice given.
I now wait for your next round or pathetic excuses for your existence and continuing of this topic.

Do you know how pathetic that sounds?
I seem to recall something similar in a film or two, I want him dead, I want his wife dead, I want his mothers sisters half brother twice removed dead. What you seem not to be able to get into your thick blinkered head is the fact that I haven’t done it, yet you are still harping on about it as though I have.

I wondered how long it would be before you came back arguing again.
Your inability to understand the rules of this forum or in your case ability to read them is to be frank, quite astounding and your constant drivel does nothing but confirm just how abundantly stupid you are, but I will admit even I didnt think you could demonstrate your ability to be, as my friend DrDill puts it, an idiot, quite as well as you seem to be able to.
Tell me, when you originally came on here to ask your question did you miss reading the rules of this site as shown here
cooker-oven-forum/gas-cooker-diy-repairs-t16259.html
or didnt you think they applied to you?

Arguing?
Are you for real?
Yes I did read the rules and I did get the help I was looking for, not to do it.
That was sorted out way before you set off on your vendetta.I can’t help but think about living next door to you and dragging an old cooker into the back garden to ‘so some work on’, just to watch you go red in the face and jump up and down waving your arms, and more than likely stamp your feet.
I’ll tell you what, I’ll say a penance to the god of natural gas for even thinking about touching something concerning it.
God knows what I would have to do if I actually did it, explode in a fireball taking my nearest and dearest with me and anyone that said anything against you I guess, if you had your anal way.
