Walmart Will Help U.S. Onshoring of Appliance Production
Walmart and Sam’s Club will buy an additional $50 billion in U.S. products over the next 10 years. The retailer will help grow U.S. manufacturing on two fronts:
* By increasing what it already buys in the United States.
* By helping to onshore U.S. production in high potential product areas, such as higher-end appliances.“At the heart of our national political conversation today is one issue: creating jobs to grow the economy,” said Simon. “We are meeting with our suppliers on domestic manufacturing and are making a strong commitment to move this forward.”
Walmart created a senior team within the company to lead the effort and will sign longer-term purchase agreements to give suppliers more certainty.

A leopard can’t change it’s spots Ally. Walmart in the US is a cheap tacky supermarket chain that sells to the masses. Back here in the UK nothing changes because their company Asda only sell cheap tacky appliances like Russell Hobbs and such. It is their place in the marketplace and will always be. 😉

yeh i know you can buy a dvd player for £17 ..in asda /tescos etc
but what are they doing to help with the uk appliance industry – not very much by the looks of it ..
in america all the big shops etc and consumers seem to be a bit more switched on.
everything comes down to price i suppose but if they can spend that in america why not a uk budget ..
mind you do we have a uk manufacturer ???

granted we dont have many , but that means they cant say we dont know who to choose …lol
seriously it would be great to have uk manufacturers – but i wonder on cost and would the uk consumer buy or care that it was uk made …
or do they just want cheap crap
look at the latest food fiasco … seriously do these people think that a 12 pence burger will be full of anything but —-cr###p

The trouble is, as usual, actually getting the punters to get onboard with it.
They say they will support local business to get quality products but, when it comes time to actually part with the cash… they buy horse burgers, cheap Chinese tat and then whine about the poor quality.

we seem to have a society of i want i want dont care if its crap -if it breaks it will give me something to do that day instead of watching jeremy kyle.
but seriously whos job is it to educate the buying public – the shops/sales staff certainly wont let them know their about to buy a piece of tat – this is all to do with profit and the extra sale of insurance ..
even if you buy a cheap car nowadays they do actualy work

You are wrong, i sell appliances and i do tell the customers if its crap or not, its the sheds that wont tell them and to be honest engineers that visit customers dont exactly point them in the direction of a independant retailer for a replacement appliance, we can all help to educate customers but the end result might mean less repair work, and that wont suit everyone.

We tell customers exactly the same as well. At the end of the day you can only advise, you can’t make them buy.

That is so very true Ally and today more and more people are realising that fact and what’s more are taking that line when it comes to replacing their duff mid-range appliance. Here is a typical example of the public’s mindset : –

Many on here are quick to argue that by buying cheap and replacing every 2 yrs or so is false economy and for the most part they are quite correct. Mid range Bosch these days are pretty crap, I would be the first to admit, costly to repair and break down frequently. Good for the trade but the public aren’t daft, they have figured it out already the fact that even mid range is pretty rubbish. High end? Not a cat in hells chance of shifting the consensus of opinion against buying cheap and shoddy.
I hate to tell you this, but in spite of your best intentions the ‘better end’ of products you are trying to sell are failing just as often as the cheap crap once they are sold for general public consumption. They don’t hold up to the standard we expected a few short years back and they fail the test of time in no short order. Hence the reasoning behind many who are now buying on-line and dumping when it goes wrong. In so doing they are ‘cutting out the middle man’ (a.k.a) you and I that eek a living from repairing them. The future for the blue collared repairman ain’t so good!
Historically, and I go back many years, this general rubbish ( beit cheap or costly) was, after all said and done, fixable. These days cost comes starkly into the equation. The end result means that, with those that are fixable, it is too expensive and impracticle to even contemplate. The alternative is cheap and easily available, so to use Ken’s much used expression…..go figure!

I dissagree martin, give me the choice of a £350 Bosch or £350 Hotpoint i will take the bosch every day and it will out last the hotpoint, but thats just my opinion on selling bosch.

The Bosch has better, more reliable electronics but apart from that the rubbish is just the same. Break the door handle on the Bosch = new expensive door assy. On the Hotpoint the handle can be replaced as well as other door parts. Get anything stuck in one of their honeycomb drums and you have a problem on your hands. With Hotpoint you simply lift the drum paddles to drag it out! Bosch pumps have these crap bayonet fixing onto the drain hose, to release involves potential damage to the pump in order to get it off. Hotpoint pumps are still held on by Corbin clip, easy to release. Bosch split tubs are a sod to take apart, with Hotpoint, just a few screws…….and so on!
So, £350, Bosch or Hotpoint?….both rubbish, take your pick!

To me this sounds like a fairly pointless discussion.
It’s a bit like trying to decide which pistol is best to shoot yourself in the head with when, the end result is pretty much the same.
