    Yep, i always give motor com’s a tickle with a ceramic stick, theyre always that bit quieter when you do so i’ve found.. which must be a good thing 😯

    Martin, i would disagree with your point about com sticks only being good for smoothing ‘tramlines’ on commutators, i’m sure you remember the gen Hotpoint armatures which came with a dusting of ceramic powder on the com, no tramlines on a new armature so that can only have been meant to bed in the brushes.. worked too, IMO 😉

    Whats the harm in cleaning up the com anyway?? allways do it never had any trouble with anything

    As you may realise, the “tight section in the holder” is the brush locking tab not properly retracted. It’s therefore important to ensure that tab is pushed well clear and then the new brushes will slide freely down the holder. 😉

    I also give the cleaned commutator a brush and blow along the grooves with a small paint brush in the hope of getting rid of residual carbon dust in those grooves. Ideally I take the motor out in the garden.
