I say your problem is the pump. My colleague Bryan is convinced it is the heater. I sit and wait meanwhile the further developments with interest
Hi Martin
Thats what we thought at first but after 6 months of doing GIAS work direct and tech I think tech will win.
Also your appliance has a maximum repair cost of £119 including all parts & labour if done through hoover/candy

Hi chaps, I haven’t ruled out that both of you are right!
With the dirty washing backing up I tried to find a workaround for now since the parts shop want me to return the element before they order the new part – looking at another few days without the washer apparently.
I found that after the wash cycle stops, if I put the machine onto drain it makes all the right noises for a couple of minutes but then won’t let me rinse. However, if I pause the washer after the wash cycle and open the filter, quite a lot of water comes out. Then it does let me do the rinse and spin. Almost as though the weight of the water is too great for the motor.
Tempted to get a new pump because of this – plus, it can’t hurt matters.May 12, 2014 at 10:59 am #413330lateintheday

New pump (ASKOLL) arrived today. Typically, the electrical connections are different – the old pump had parallel terminals and connected by a plastic encased block. The new pump has a perpendicular arrangement. I note that this can be replaced with separate spade connections, but do they need to be anything special? Insulated or just bog standard.

SUCCESS! 😀
Just finished the first load. Turned out to be the drain pump after all – well done and huge thanks Martin. Thanks also Bryan for your input.
For those with similar issues, can I just add that I’m sure a tech would have spotted this within minutes. I had watched the old pump’s impeller spin and to be honest, it looked fine (even when taken out) and it sounded quiet. However, as soon as the new pump kicked in, there was a really clear gurgling noise as water gushed through the system/standpipe.
I guess I’m not as observant as I thought – the noise difference was so obvious.May 13, 2014 at 6:15 am #413335Martin
