ParticipantGood evening,
I have a Hotpoint WDL540 which has developed a fault which seems to occur after the wash cycle finishes (just before the dry cycle). It would stop and the row of lights would flash and the right-hand column of lights would remain lit as normal, after cutting the power and restarting a dry cycle it would usually operate as expected.
However, earlier today it occurred again and and no water had been pumped out, the load was still soapy which would indicate this has occurred earlier in the cycle. The row of lights flash and the column of lights has 1-to-4 lit from bottom to top (first being the lock light), this happens when I test it on spin and pump out settings. The drum does spin and the pump does operate, I took the pump out and checked for blockages between the drum and waste hose and all is fine. I took the top of the dryer unit off, cleared a little fluff from fan also but the issue remains.
I am confident on changing any defective parts however I don’t want to keep buying bits until I find the defective one so any advice of the so called error code (if that is what it is) would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Regards, Alex.

Lights 1 to 4 from bottom up signify F15. No heater on dryer side, possible relay fault on main pcb. 🙁

Am I right in thinking I can test the dryer element with multimeter, no circuit would suggest its faulty? If there is a circuit then that would suggest PCB issue?
Thanks, Alex.

You can test both the heater and the thermal protection to the heater but you should get F14 if they are faulty. In fact on some models the dryer heater has internal thermal cut outs.
You would need to give us the full model number and the commercial code from the rating plate for us to tell you which type you have.

Thanks – I will try this and get the model/commercial code. Where can I find the list of Fxx codes with corresponding lights?

Thanks – not familiar with forum layout on tapatalk.
I tested the element connections with multimeter, I don’t have a continuity test but I get no resistance reading when connected (1 is the default) but I see changes when testing on other conductive surfaces.
Should I see a resistance from the element?
Thanks, Alex.

Heater resistance should be around 43?.

Thanks for the reply, I think I’m going to source a replacement element and see how it goes.
Btw, Model number is WDL540 G(UK).C

That model does have the heater cut outs which are internal, part No: C00268319.

I replaced the dryer element today and just finished a wash successfully, thanks very much for the help, saved me a lot of money no doubt!

Think I need to temper my celebrations just a bit. On the dryer cycle I believe I have error F13 – Tumble dryer rear temperature rise too high. This has happened periodically over the last year or so, which I am guessing could have caused the element to go if it’s getting too hot? It says to check the fan motor or dryer filter, I cleared fluff out of the fan when it was apart. How should I test it? Also, where is the dryer filter?
Thanks, Alex.

You will have to remove the condenser to clean filter, a rather difficult task on an Indesit made, sealed drum machine. You can see the lint filter in the attached diagram.

Just tried another wash cycle without drying and I am back to where I was before, lights 1-4 lit (interestingly there are 6 in total as opposed to 5 in the fault guide).
I’ve tested the dryer element again for continuity and its knackered, which is not what I’d expect as I have avoided the drying cycle. I was hoping it would at least continue to function as a washing machine.
Any advice you can suggest before I am forced to pay to have it repaired or replaced?
Regards, Alex.
