That reading is fine, some heat resistant wiring such as used in cookers would be good but if you haven’t replaced the original wiring tag then you really should.

The condition of the terminals you can see bears no relation to the condition of the switch contacts inside the timer.

    Pretty sure it’s sorted.

I cut the original tag off about 20mm from the end to make sure I have good clean copper. I have crimped a new tag on and hey presto the wire gets no warmer than any of the other hi load wiring in the machine ie. very slightly warm. I think I would expect that from a cable carrying 12amps. I’m going to go round the machine making sure the electrical connections are good and tight, it’s an old machine after all. How is soldering rather than crimping terminals viewed in the whitegoods word?

It has just run through the cycle perfectly so I am happy, with a bit of luck that timer will last a while, I know it’s hard to know but it looks looked hardly used. I’m pretty confident I have a good timer, I will try to carefully take the old one apart and see if it might be repairable?

Huge thanks to all the fellas who helped out especially ‘iadom’.

Sounds good, crimping is fine if done correctly, good for another 20 years now. 8)

Do bear in mind that the heater is fed via the thermostat, so the total resistance could be increased as a result of the stat being faulty? Any poor connection will produce excess heat so if the terminal connections are good, the heater resistance is good, then the stat may play it’s part in the overheating experienced?
