The agitation action is fairly aggressive, and the agitator rotates back and forth in a 90degree arc. During the wash cycle the total time it agitates depends on the programme selected. For example, prog 1 = 13 mins, prog 3 = 7 mins, prog 6 only 2 minutes. (total wash agitation time) followed by the rinse cycle. Rinse times also vary dependant on programme selected.
If there were a problem with the gearbox gyration action (normally worn clutch spring) holding the white gyrator (not the spindle) you can stop it turning. Whereas a with a fully functional gearbox that would be impossible and likely as not you could sprain your wrist in the attempt!!!
In the many years I’ve been fixing 9605’s they either gyrate or they don’t, there’s no in between.

Thanks for the reply!
There certainly seems to be nothing wrong with the gearbox. Stopping the oscillation of the spindle is not possible at all.
The spindle seems to be doing the correct 90 degree oscillation however it is only doing this for 3 short bursts during the whole agitation period. I guess these only last for 5 seconds each time.
Could this mean a problem with the timer?
All the best, Stuart

Can’t rule that possibility out I suppose after all the timer is just a box full of cams and leaf spring contacts, one of which is arcing. Very unusual though for this to be the case. I’m wondering if the thermal overload in the motor windings are tripping out? That would be more conducive to the symptoms you describe I would think. 😐 😕

To be honest, I would be very surprised if it was the timer too. I changed this part only a couple of months ago so it’s nearly new…
Is there any way to test/repair the thermal cutout on the motor?

Observe the motor whilst it’s in action is the best way. When it stops, unplug the machine and then check the continuity of the motor windings. If the thermal overload has tripped then at that point the windings will be open circuit.
It ‘s embedded in the coil somewhere though it’s been donkeys years, 4 kids, 3 wives and a spell in rehab since I last fixed one of these beasts. :clown:

If the machine completes the spin cycle perfectly and the motor is tripping out then something ‘gearbox’ related could be the problem.
If the gearbox is seized or stiff the the motor would cut out after a short while but the timer would continue to count down as normal. If it was in a long wash cycle then it should count down for say 15 minutes although usually in this space of time the motor overload would have reset and the motor kicked into life again.
If you remove the mains plug and the back panel then ‘lock’ the gearbox on the brake lever, can you turn the motor clutch pulley to the left quite easily?
PS. I repaired a 1509 only a few months back. :eeek:

Thank you for the replies!
I am back in the UK next weekend so I will test the gearbox as you suggested.
If there is a problem with the gearbox, can these be serviced/rebuilt? I see they are no longer available as spares so would this mean the machine is beyond repair?
Many thanks, Stuart

Hello All,
After a couple of years in the garage waiting for a rainy day, it’s time to get rid. Before I take it to the skip I thought I would ask here if anyone you like this for spares or repair.
The unit has provided many years of fantastic service requiring only the usual replacement drive belts and water pumps now and again. As you will see in this thread, around 2 years ago it developed a fault with the warm wash cycles which after replacing the timer unit (brand new original item) turned out to be a fault in the hot water valve. After this repair it worked perfectly for a month then began stopping mid cycle. At this point it was decided to replace rather than repair again.
The machine is in pretty good, used condition and comes with the original (still functional) timer and a spare serviceable water pump.
Be a good machine for someone wanting spares but I am sure could also be fixed by someone who knows what they’re looking for.
Going free to anyone who would like it. To be collected near Lancaster.
All the best, Stuart
