ParticipantHi,
My machine stopped working this evening and started beeping and showed an error code of E30 which I think relates to the motor.
This makes sense as everything seems to go as normal until it’s time for the drum to start turning at which point it stops with the E30 code and the drum does not move at all.
Could it be a duff motor or maybe the brushes need replacing.
As far as I can tell the model number of the motor is 161413.
Would realy like to get this machine going again ASAP and as cheaply as possible as not working at the moment…so any help/advice would be great.
Cheers, Lee

You may be correct in suspecting the brushes, how did you come by that part number for the motor, this machine originally had a GDA or an AEG manufactured motor, it was only fitted with the FHP motor later. The number you quoted is for the later FHP motor kit that was supplied to replace all earlier motors. The brushes for all three motors are available but are completely different.
Please make sure to remove the plug before you dive in, have a look at the motor and see if it has any identifying label on it.BTW. The motor kit 161413 is over £143 ex Vat. 😥

Thanks for the quick reply 😉

The motor has a small sticker on it with the following details…
UDZ 112 G 55
ND 082030 258 S2 0415
240v 50Hz Iskl.B/F AC-EL

That sounds like an FHP motor, quite a good motor not prone to failure. The brushes for all these motors will be available from the on site shop, part No:1603910, however, there are several other things that can cause E30 such as broken wiring, faulty electronic components etc. You do need a certain level of expertise to diagnose brush/motor problems. If in any doubt have a look at Repairs@ to see if there is someone in your area.

ParticipantWell I sourced some brushes locally and the problem persists.
I have also checked the wiring as best I can and none are borken and have checked the continuity of most of them.
No obvious signs of any problems with the front PCB but haven’t looked at the one on the side…maybe a relay has gone ?
Looks like I’ll be looking for a new machine…it’s over ten years old so probably not worth getting anyone in to look at it.

Were the brushes worn ?
If they were, there should be a 7.5A fuse on the inside of the control panel, check that if it has one 😉
Don’t forget to unplug :zap:

ParticipantThe old brushes did look worn with the new ones being twice as long as the old ones but I think they were still making contact.
Fuse is okay…and again nothing obviously wrong looking on that side PCB either.

The E30 error code actually means “no tacho pulses”. If the motor goes into a quick spin (for a second or so) and then shows E30 the fault could be a wiring fault on the motor connector block or on the control module.
If the E30 code shows 20 seconds after starting a wash program without any sign of motor action then the system had detected voltage being sent to the motor but no motor action. In which case it is an open circuit somewhere in the motor circuitry or a faulty power module.

ParticipantIt’s the second scenario Bob…is it fixable or worth fixing ? something I could atempt o would it require a service engineer ?

Look for dry joints on circuit board. Power off of course :plug:

Common problem here is a bad connection on the RAST5 motor plug. It’s not always obvious as the wire breaks inside the insulation.
If you can’t find a break then it’s engineer time I’m afraid.
It’s difficult to say whether it’s worth fixing but it is quite an old model. If it’s got an enamel drum, then it’s probably not worth replacing the motor as there are several parts that are no longer available on these machines.

9949 is a Micro Profile machine. Nylon drum etc. If the drum is nice and quite when you rotate it by hand and the overall condition looks good then it should be well worth having it looked at. The FHP motor is a good one generally. I would still bet on a loose contact such as a wiring break. As Bob says motor plug connections are a very common cause. Be very careful if you attempt to have a look more closely at these, all the wires a white, also there is a special tool for refitting the wires back into the plug socket correctly.

ParticipantI have tested the continuity of the wires from the motor. The six white wires went to the side PCB and the other two went to the front PCB…all seemed fine.
What about inside the motor ? worth taking a look ?

Yep, it’s worth a check but as Iadom said earlier, if this is an FHP motor, they are generally reliable.

ParticipantRe: Hotpoint 9949 Washer/Dryer Fault
It’s fixed 😀
I decided to have one last look before heading out to Comet/Currys and I removed the side PCB this time, instead of just pearing at it with torch, and found a dry joint – I think thats what you’d call it – behind the connector which runs the six white wires to the motor.
So I re-soldered the joints and put it back together and success.
Have now put the rest of the machine back together and put it on a short run to test.
But fingers crossed it’ll be okay for a while longer…plus it has a new set of brushes 😛
Many thanks for all you help and suggestions.
Cheers, Lee
