ParticipantOur WD440 has developed a fault which results in it not responding to any of the touch buttons, its done this once before when unpluggin it from the mains seemed to ‘reboot’ it, has anyone experienced similar or got any suggestions? I’m tempted to return it under warranty but am not sure what are my rights are.
Thanks

How long have you had the machine? You have to give the manufacturers the chance to effect a repair if it is still under guarantee.

Thanks for your replies.
We bought the machine at the end of December last year, so its 4 months old, the previous machine lasted 8 years…………
The buttons don’t latch so I don’t think they are stuck.
Since my first post I stopped the machine pulled out the three large towels and re-started it, it then drained and spun OK, perhaps the out of balance sensor is u/s?
Will call Hotpoint in the morning, but think it might not be fit for purpose can I demand my money back for Hotpoint or the retailer?
Thanks

If you had three large towels in then it is possible the out of balance control was working fine. The large size of modern drums means that you need to put a good sized load in to avoid out of balance when filling the drum with heavy items. There can be occasions when the exact same load may spread evenly around the drum and others when it does not. I would expect my 5 year old Hotpoint to go OOB with only three towels in it at least 50{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of the time.
The buttons do not ‘latch’ they operate by pressing small touch sensor switches on the control board.
When they cause problems it is usually down to the buttons being pressed to hard or something being spilt onto the facia.
I am at a loss as to why you think you have any right at all to have this machine replaced. 😕

Jim,
Thanks for your reply and comment re the out of balance.
I hope the buttons aren’t too susceptible to water it’s a washing machine installed in a kitchen after all, is this really a design ‘fit for purpose’?
The odd thing is that even after being unplugged all day when I plugged it in this evening it still thinks its mid programme.
I wouldn’t expect a 5 month old machine to be so tempremental/faulty hence my comment about getting shot of it, engineer coming on Tuesday….

Anything spilt onto the control panel can cause problems, tea & coffee being the biggest culprits, coffee in particular can set like tar and completely gum up the controls.

Hi, re-fit for purpose buttons, how else would you expect to use a machine without buttons? and yes if you spill coffee, tea or anything else over the worktop & it runs onto the machine it can ‘gum’ up the buttons, if any one button gets stuck it will stop all the others from working, as for the switch off for 5 hours, once a programme is set you can turn it off for 6 months and it will still try to complete that prog when next powered up, if you are unable to even start or cancel the programme then chances are it’s just a stuck button, good luck for tuesday

Buttons never had more than the odd splash of water on them, the programme dial is not a mechanical unit with contacts, but seemingly just a ‘switch’ so not sure why its stuck on one programme, if I cancel the programme using the cancel button it does no good and refuses to accept a new programme, I still think its faulty, none of my other white goods, tv, video, etc are so tempremental. I left it on the same programme for two hours and its still not finished…………………

Well the Hotpoint service man visited today and confirmed that the machine had developed a fault.
After checking the control panel he moved to the power module (large PCB in a white plastic box at the base of the machine). He replaced this entire unit and the plug-in eeprom part numbers C00143056 and 1604912 and its now OK.
All carried out under warranty, nothing to do with our use of the appliance, just faulty components, lets hope the replacements are more robust.
