ParticipantUPDATE…………….
Hotpoint are sending an engineer out on friday to finally write off this machine, yipeeeeeee!
D & G weren’t to impressed with this saga, and have acted on my behalf.
The only downside is that they will charge me the final 3 months extended warranty payments + a £39.99 delivery charge. Still for £69.99 im getting a brand new machine.
I have been told that I do not have to take another WD640 but could actually have one of the washing machines instead which is of similar price.
Im looking at one of the WT models and by the looks of it we can go for the top model for a similar price to the WD640.
Could someone point me in the right direction as to which model to go for, and does anyone know of any that I should avoid/any problems?
Its a pity I have to have another hotpoint, but im hoping that just having a washer will ensure its a bit more reliable, unless anyone can tell me otherwise.
Could some also confirm the RRP of the WD640 and exactly which WT model this would be equivalent too with regards to purchase price (RRP).
Cheers for all your help on here.

Participanti wouldnt have a wt machine thrown at me with a £50 note stuck to it
the wd machines only really become a massive issue when they have that horrid blue lit digital display (software variation issues)
wont they ley you have a zanussi or a machine u know will last more than 6 weeks?
glad you got it sorted btw

ParticipantYou say the WD machines are only an issue when they have the horrid blue lit display?
The one we have at the moment doesn’t have the digital display (its red leds) but look what trouble its been?
So are you saying we could be ok with another WD model (confused)?
Yes I hear you when you say go for another make. I’ve got to wait until the engineer has been on Friday before discussing the alternatives with D & G.
Does one presume the replacement would come from comet as thats where this frankenstein of a machine came from, or will D & G source one for us.
Im pretty sure we paid around £350 for the hotpoint, so what will that buy us either from Hotpoint or another manufacturer pref in silver/graphite (gotta keep the other half happy 🙂 ).

Hi DH,
What Helo is trying to say, as diplomatically as he is able (;)), is that Hotpoint machines, any of them, are a bag of **** these days and best avoided at any cost. Not that this is an “official” position on Hotpoint/Indesit products you understand.
Ask D&G for Comet vouchers so you can at least get some choice, even if you do have to go back to Comet, as they do this for anyone else. 😉

Let’s just make this clear – your machine has a Hotpoint box and drum. The control circuits – the electronics – and the dryer system are Indesit derived. Even the mildest search through the forums will reveal the full horror of Indesit electronics. The difference between the washer and the washer dryer is an extra double terminal on the computerboard. Many of the boards used have that connection already fitted.
So – generic electronics means that there is actually little difference between the washer and washer dryer versions – they are just as likely to fail.
To be honest, I’d hold out for a cash settlement, then go and buy something which is not connected to the Indesit Company in any way.
If you don’t, we’re going to be having this conversation again in a years time. Or less.

Participantgee thanx k… u know i have problems expressing myself in written verse.. i think the points both u and penguin make are more than valid, its always a difficult one when people buy these things in their masses
incidentally, being a comet engineer, i can say that d&g are actually a good company to deal with (when , of course, you can actually speak to them direct) and yes its possible to ask for a different machine as a suitable replacement, and often they do, the only bind is of course the cost, if its more, you’ve got to pay the difference!
but what do we advise? bosch? miele?
suitable alternatives yet often more expensive
and in washer dryer?
well, bosch or miele of course, but zanussi machines arent so bad
knowing whats out there, its a difficult one to advise on, the only certain thing is not to buy ANY merloni based machine (ariston / indesit / hotpoint / creda )
sorry if i come across badly at times, but im only trying to help!

ParticipantThanks guys.
Ok, its comet vouchers/cash settlement then. Go get myself a nice new bosch (in silver) washing machine me thinks.
Incidentally, has anyone ever visited comets auction site? I’ve seen some good machines on there, boxed and unused with transit bolts (wouldn’t touch ’em if they didn’t have the transit bolts in place or they had been used). Some of them seem to just have cosmetic damage, and if I could get one with scratches or dents on the left or right hand side, you’ll never see them. Is it risky buying like this, or could I save some dosh?

I purchased my six year old Hotpoint WMA 63 from Comets auction site, apart from a preemptive drum change 😉 it has been faultless.

….and you can’t get more contradictory than that unless you own a Hotpoint. 🙂 😉 :innocent:
The brand name is no contradiction however as it always generates heated debates every time the name is mentioned….. 8)

My machine does have two distinct advantages, one it was made in the year 2BM 😉 , and two it is not used by a member of the general public. 😆

Right as a Hotpoint engineer i think i had better put a few people right on a couple of points.
Domestic and General pay Indesit company upfront for any repairs that are to be carried out on products covered by their warranties(so why would they fork out for an independant)
We as engineers CAN NOT write off a machine for BER(unless the parts are obsolete) contrary to what the bulk of posters think we have to repair it.
I cannot see how you can slag off all Indesit machines Have you seen many of the Aqualtis/Moon range going wrong, any horror stories on them .
Slag my company off all you want but lets remember they do employ a lot of people in the UK albeit for the time being, how many british people are employed in the manufactur of the oft pluggedISE machine.November 13, 2007 at 7:50 am #231494Dales-Electronic
ModeratorRe: Hotpoint, arrrgggghhhh!! What are my options??
And how many British people lost their jobs as a result of Merloni’s involvment – say – Blyth Bridge and Philco does that ring any bells. As you quite rightly say, there are two sides to every story.

Hi kiddo,
I know that you will have a loyalty to Hotpoint and that’s fine, we are all entitled to our opinions and yours is just as valuable as anyone else’s.
I would point out however that ISE is small beer (very) in comparison to the people that pay your wages. It is built around a model of longevity (cheap spares, which Indesit don’t do) and a level customer service which virtually no large company can touch, including the Indesit Company. They just haven’t the flexibility to compete in the area.
Oh and all employees of ISE are in the UK and ISE generates commerce in the UK for UK businesses.
As for Moon and Aqualtis, yes, there are already some horror stories floating about, including entire inner tub/drum unit changes (as it’s all-in-one and cannot be disassembled AIUI) for coin damage and one for a bra wire stuck in it.
