ParticipantA couple of weeks ago, our Hotpoint washing machine kept tripping our electricity in the kitchen.
Our consumer unit has RCBOs, so (naughtily) I changed it to an MCB to get us out of trouble, and all was fine until last night.
Now, the washing machine is completely dead. I’ve checked the fuses etc, and they’re OK, so I suspect whatever caused the problem initially has come back to bite us and has pulled the whole machine down.
So, has anyone got any suggestions about what I should look at first?
Is this a common fault (ie, a faulty circuit board) and if so, is there a supplier of reconditioned boards?Look forward to hearing from someone.

Moderatorhave you checked the terminal block where the power lead enters the machine ?

ParticipantNot yet. It’s an integrated machine, so haven’t pulled it out yet.
Was thinking it would probably be something ‘more’ than that, bearing in mind our previous issue with it tripping the consumer unit fuse.

Moderatorsome of the terminal blocks burn out and start tripping RCD’s

ParticipantLovely. Thanks. That’ll be my first port of call.

ParticipantOK, so I took the machine out.
This is where the power comes in.
http://www.pinecrest.co.uk/misc/wash…/washing_4.png
All seems fine and there’s 240v going in and going out of that thingI guess the power then travels down to the main control board and is fed by this plug
http://www.pinecrest.co.uk/misc/wash…/washing_3.png
There’s power getting to this plug. I guess the other live and neutral go off to the motor – there’s continuity between these two, so that seems OK.This is the control board, and I’m guessing this is what’s failed, but I have no way of testing.
http://www.pinecrest.co.uk/misc/wash…/washing_2.pngWas hoping that I’d be able to find someone who repairs/refurbishes such things, but I can’t find anyone.
However, I have found this:
https://appliancespareparts.mysimple…le-21501016603
Seems pretty reasonable, but from what I’ve read, these control board are used in a number of machines and this one may be out of a machine that isn’t the same as our one.So, a couple of questions.
1. Is it a pretty safe bet that this board is the thing that’s failed in our machine?
2. If I go ahead and buy this second hand replacement board, what are the chances it’ll work in our machine? An help would be much appreciated.

https://www.qualityelectronicrepairs.co.uk/if you buy a secondhand board it may have different software on it
have you tried removing the lead wire that foes between both board and see if its just a bad joint. also look at the wire to make sure its not damaged anywhere

ParticipantAre you saying to double check the wire between the control box at the bottom and the display/control board?

correct since the front board is the remote control of the other then a wire problem between the 2 either dirty plugs or damaged cable will give the effect of no power
you could also check for voltage to the top board as it needs a 5v supply to work

ParticipantAny idea where to check for 5v off that remote board?
February 5, 2022 at 6:15 pm #480949electrofix
Moderatorshort answer no
that sort of info is not in the tech
all i know is you have 5 wires coming up and there has to be 5v between 2 of them for unit to workDave

ParticipantThanks Dave
I know which five wires these are. I’ve tested the wires for continuity, and no problem there, so I’ll temporarily reconnect the main board again and test for 5v at the panel PCB.

ParticipantPins number 1-5.
Centre pin (3) ground,
Pin (4) Vcc (could be 12v on your version)If you can’t get it repaired just supply the product codes on the rating label and I will check if I have the module/software in stock.

ParticipantThanks for all this
I plugged the main board back in, and then tested the wires going to the remote board. As suspected there were a range of voltages across the different pins ranging from 5v to 12v.
So, there’s power getting to the remote board.
Do we now think it’s the remote board or the main board, or shall I just send both off to that repair place?

ParticipantUsually turns out to be the the main power board but I have been wrong before.
