Wot? You finished all them bearing changes and back for lunch already?
If the stuff didn’t clog up the eco ball, it would clog up something else; filter, sink waste spigot / non-return valve or whatever. Admittedly those are easier to get at. The real problem IMO is people with shaggy dogs, rabbit hair pullovers and colourcatchers.
Must be a real challenge to design a machine to accomodate all variations of customer misbehaviour 😛 .
Actually the rubber flap on the WMA pumps are less susceptible to problems :duck: and are at least better than nothing from the separation point of view.
Yes, Ecover pongs when it’s not rinsed away properly. Still, I prefer that to no fish in the river. And the microbes are perfectly able to eat normal washing powder too judging by the smelly washers I’ve come across.

HeHe… this looks like this is turning into a whole new thread about eco balls..

Must admit to agreeing with Jim that I take them out if I suspect they are giving a problem – but leave them in if they don’t but never taken one out on a washer drier as I wasn’t sure if it might make a difference to the air flow on the drying cycle and so err on the side of caution.

How ever – If I do take one out for what ever reason I do hand them to the customer AND tell them why the manifacturer puts them there AND explain how it works AND why I have taken it out. I ALSO tell them to phone me back if they notice any reduction in the performance of their machine and if in anyway they feel unhappy with what I have done and I will come back and refit it free of charge.

Over the last 10 years, Out of the dozen or so I have taken out since manifacures have been fitting them NEVER had anyone phone me and ask me to refit the ball – still go to some of my customers and see the ball sitting on a window ledge or in a container as I have asked them to hang onto it just incase.

In my oppinion any benifit that they produce in soap saving is either nulified by the manafactures instruction book which fails to tell people that they are fitted and they can reduce the powder they put in. Also in the potential problems they can cause due to restricted access to the sump hose or trap that allows objects that get into the tub to exit quickly to save damage to tub or drum.

If they are so crutial to the opperation of the machine why is there no apparent dectectable reduction in the opperation or performance of the machine as far as the customer is conserned or I as an engineer have noticed?

I am not saying that we should all take out the eco balls willy nilly as like Martin says manifactures must fit them for a reason, but feel slightly slighted that those of us that have taken out the odd one or two do it without any thought or regard to the consequences.

But I am yet to be convinced that they play such an important roll in the opperation of most machines that some would suggest.

I recently changed a tub on a wma, similar to the one above but this was in a pub. The Eco ball area was filled with commercial grade liquid detergent gunk. I do not need to spell it out, basically none of the staff there were clued up on detergent use and I had to give them training and advised the purchaser of stock is to pop down to the supermarket and get domestic powder as it is much easier for the staff to follow it rather than using commercial grade. So this begs the argument on saving money or ease of use but in this case it was a case of ease of use cos the staff are too busy to care. I blame all the stragglers and drunkards! Too many beer mats to wash!
