A friend of mine has a problem with their Hotpoint washing machine
I don’t know the model number yet.
The problem is the drum will not turn when machine is on but you can here the motor trying to turn the drum. you can turn the drum manually one way but it will not turn the opposite way manually any ideas?? I was thinking it could be jammed?

    Thanks

Take the belt off and try turning it by hand again. It could be something stuck between the inner and outer drums, broken drum bearings or broken motor bearings.

He has taken the belt off he can turn the drum one way but its hard to turn the opposite way. What could the problem be?
How easy is it to remove the inner drum?

That all depends on model number and even more important whether or not it has the dreaded sealed drum. :rolls:

I had a look at the machine today The model number is WF320
I took the lid of i notice the belt has come off, i put the belt back on it works but when its going into spin it sound like a train and their is movement up and down on the inner drum.
I think the spider is broken
how easy is it to replace the spider and bearing?

Spider unlikely to be broken on a machine of this age.

Is the outer drum a completely welded assembly or is it in two halves secured by screws?

Either way if it has already thrown the belt off then you are into major repairs.

A complete drum assembly for the welded drum and for the most effective, long term repair of a screwed drum you would need a rear drum half and 35mm drum support spider to replace the shoddy, Indesit inspired 30mm shaft & bearings.

Neither job is a simple DIY repair TBH.

So you think its is the outer drum which is broken?
How much will all the parts cost?

Re: Hotpoint washing machine drum not moving

It is possible to replace the bearings on these but the fact that it has already thrown the belt off and is binding suggests that it has been allowed to run for far to long making a loud noise. This will have resulted in serious damage to the bearings and almost certainly the drum shaft.

The 35mm drum rear half is around £76 ex vat, 35mm spider is approx £34 ex vat.

This machine will more than likely have the smaller, cheaper 30mm bearings fitted. The bearings are available as a kit but the shaft is not.

Personally I do not replace the 30mm bearings because they will fail again in no time at all. I always fit a new 35mm drum rear and 35mm shaft in the certain knowledge that it will be a sound, long term repair. Sadly as this machine has got the very dodgy Indesit electronics in it I wouldn’t vouch for the rest of it. :rolls:

Do you think its worth trying to repair it? If so
how easy is it to remove the drum out of the machine
Would i have to buy a gasket aswell?

    Also
How much will the cheaper parts cost
    30mm bearings and spider /shaft?

Re: Hotpoint washing machine drum not moving

Its only easy when you know what you are doing, 😉

As I have already mentioned in earlier posts its not really a simple DIY job.

I did also mention that the 30mm drum spider is not available as a spare. You can either change the 30mm bearings or replace the drum rear half and 35mm spider.

It really all depends upon your skills and we have no idea what they are.

If you do want to attempt a repair then I would suggest that you try and strip it down first before you waste any money ordering parts. That way you will be able to assess the damage done to the drum spider shaft.

Thanks for your reply if i was to have a go can you
lift it out from the top or do you need to remove the front panel?
Do i need any spicical tools to remove the bearings
I am an engineer byself so my DIY skills are good.

Re: Hotpoint washing machine drum not moving

Mains plug out, front panel off, make sure you make a careful note of any wiring connections to the control PCB etc. Drum lifts out complete from front. Take off all the obvious things such as the motor, hoses and concrete weights first.

No special tools but a huge hammer is essential. 😀

We can’t go into blow by blow instructions, we assume some expertise on your part, 😉

Remove the soap drawer and pull the plinth off the bottom front.
