Thanks for the help so far. The advice seems to be that if the belt was worn it would have fallen off by now. I am concerned that it does not sit centrally on the pulley. Is there any way I can adjust this; I m worried about it rubbing against the drum?
There is no rust inside the drum but it making a noise on the 1600 spin that it did not do before the smelling incident; that’s why I assumed they were linked. So if it is not the bearings and not the belt, what could it be?
I will probably call someone out this week or next. What’s a typical call ut cost these days and what would I expect to pay for the work (no longer under warranty)?
Thanks.

Do a quick check – open the door, take hold of the drum at the 12 o’clock position and lift. If you can see the drum moving relative to the edge of the door seal, the bearings are going.
The best way of dealing with the problem is to replace the back half of the tub completely – component cost around £60. Your engineer will charge for at least an hour and a halfs work (and he’ll work for it!) so discuss this when you make the appointment. You may upon disassembly find that the shaft is damaged, and needs replacing as well – another £50 odd.
Alternatively, if your machine is under 5 years old, Hotpoint will do all of the above for the call out charge of £89.95.

Regards,
Penguin45.Thanks. I’m sad to say that the drum does lift a little; I guess the bearings must be going. What is their usual life expectancy? The local repairman quoted about £120+vat but because it is under 5 years, Hotpoint say the parts are covered and I only have to pay for labour if I use them. So I guess, I’ll ask Hotpoint to do it, but they are charging £94, not £89 for it; I guess their prices have gone up.
Also Hotpoint say they’ll do it there and then, the local repairers want to take it away for a couple of days to do.
It only plays up on the cotton spin. Presumably the lower spins do not put such a strain on the bearings, so this is an early warning.
Thanks for all your help.

But Merloni (Hotpoint) might take a week or two to get to you, IME.

Indeed. If I was you, I’d give the job to the local guy, rather than the big evil coperation 😉 But I would say that, I’m a local guy 😛

The fact that I am under warranty swayed my opinion, because I am not paying for parts, but if I was out of warranty, I would have gone local. Hotpoint say they will come Monday.

Hotpoint will replace the complete Drum Assembly where’as I’m not sure that for just £120 the local guy would do the same? 🙄

For £120, I do the ‘Goatboy’ update for my customers, which I think will make the next set of bearings last alot longer than new bearings with the Hotpoint updates. 😉
And of course, the level of service from an indepent, is always better than the level of service you get with Herloni!

Going out tomorrow to a Hotpoint machine under six months old.
Customer has been told she will have to wait until the 16th of June for the Indecent Company 😥
Young mum expecting again in next couple of days.
