Do you know Jim, in nearly 20 years, I’ve never replaced a support tube? Maybe because we live in a nice soft water area? I don’t know – it shouldn’t be getting wet anyway. I’ve pulled quite a few gearboxes apart for roll-pins and dodgy bushes – all just repair work really. Bit labour intensive, but not technically complicated.
Hotdog’s right BTW – new chinese lantern will grip better for some reason. Still, not to worry too much, they’ll all be gone soon.
Welcome aboard, Hotdog 😀 .

I always change the flex drive with one of these new pumps. We have an ultra soft water supply round here. Until they became obsolete I used to change 2 or 3 support tubes a week, the problem started when the gearbox was redesigned in the mid 70’s, to save money they removed the large brass counterface seal and thrust bearing and inserted a carbon seal into a thin rubber seal at the top of the support tube. This left a very small part of the alloy support tube exposed to the water and detergent leading to failure. I would say that in this area the average life of the later support tube was between 7 and 8 years. Even on the earlier type sealing arrangement you got the upper face seal that slotted underneath the alloy drum support collar corroding and leaking. The changes in washing practises and detergents also led to earlier failure of these components. I could go into chapter and verse on the mess they made of the motor/gearbox on this machine, even tell you about the £25.00 I was awarded in the ‘Suggestions’ scheme, the reason the later clutch pulley went from one anti squeal spring to two was down to one of my SI (Special Investigation) reports. 😉 Or the time that a Mr Todhunter tried to belittle me when I suggested that the new gearbox without the bottom bearing support would suffer cracked chassis, which of course it did in large numbers until they changed the method of securing the three support tube and brake lever fixing bolts.
For many years after I went private I used to strip gearboxes and replace gears, and bendix drive springs, even did those without removing the gearbox from the machine.

We’re showing our age here Jim 😀 ! The young lads won’t have a clue what we’re on about. After all, its vertical, not horizontal (ooh er, Mrs) and we’re talking about fixing, rather than replacing. A dying art IMO.
Cheers,

.I also re-build p/unit if the support tube is still okThe only flaw in that is that the support tube is the weakest part of the PU. 😥
Not to mention the poor poor quality bearing on the input shaft( pulley) that collapses and lets the box spew oil out. They hived the production of the PU out to an engineering firm, who tried to re-invent the wheel, they changed nearly every part in the gearbox. Why fix it if it aint broke.

Yeah… I’m just a swopper 🙁
Saying that, i impressed mysen a few weeks ago, when i split down a timer and unsplattered the splattered contacts 😀
That is fixing stuff! But I draw the line at repairing coils in dryer heaters.
Ps. I’ve got 4 Hpt T/Ls in the backyard, in a huge, cold, wet pile for spares (if anyone is desperate). Reckon I can find mysen a S/H brake-arm 😉

There we go again, what happened to the ten year guarentee of spares after a model was dicontinued? We old boys rembember, “when I was lad”
Maybe we should all ring Hotpoint Customer Service and complain, they might get the point, there again we would have more chance of making a chocolate tea pot work. 😆 😆 -
