    Hi all

I have got one of these old beasts to go and look at on Friday – I note from the parts list that there is a gear box and clutch on the machine so would like to have some idea of how it all works (is it as complex as the whirlpool top loader one?), If possible I would like a copy of the service manual so that I can have a quick look to see what I am letting myself in for before I get there.

I have very little idea of fault yet (the customer has atrocious mobile signal and no land line for contact) but he reckoned belt (not that that means much as he also has a whirlpool top loader unit for me to look at with a “belt” problem)

    Thank you

    Jem

might have a hard copy hidden away somewhere…
Don’t remember many wash faults on those other than leaking tripod seals. The pumps sometimes seized and the belt would burn a groove into the pump pulley eventually stopping it or breaking the belt. Think also a micro switch on the heat selector switch would burn out and stop the wash motor running. Been a long time mind. not sure I would take one on nowdays.

I have a copy for the 9404, don’t think there is much difference between the models.
Let me have your email and I can send it to you.

I’m surprised you would waste your time calling TBH Jem as most parts are obsolete and it’s sure to be well knackered anyway.

He does also have a whirlpool top loader for me to look at and seems keen to get this fixed especially if it is just belts/start cap.

Maybe he just likes it but I work on the principle that if they are willing to pay and I can get the required parts then I will fix it.

I think they use a start relay rather than a capacitor

By the time this model came out they had switched to capacitor run from relay start for both motors, this came in after date code 25 (Jan 1996)

I have the last manual listed for these, circa 1999, includes the 9414 and every model made before that right back to the 1450 if you want it.

Siezed gearboxes, bad oil leaks, split support tubes, failed wash timer drive cables, etc.

yep, the first 3 caused by:

    leaking tripod seals.

predominantly, most calls were for spin faults.

Used to love working on those machines, and the top loaders

Ah, but have you ever replaced a 1090 gearbox? 😉

The original Empress models with the huge BTH motor under it’s early incarnations was lumped together as the 1090 before the Empress became the 1100 with the gearbox and motor combined in one unit.

Good lord I’d forgotten the model no’s of the Empresses. But never ever changed a gearbox on one, just pumps and wringer rollers.
