Hi Keith, I’d be interested to know what you do in the case of a BER.

believe it or not i don’t charge anything. my wife says i’m stupid but the problem is that i live in an area where everyone knows every one. the fact that i haven’t charged for a call usually ends up with a high recommend to another customer or a day or so later they ring up and buy a machine. it only gets me down if i have a few calls like that in the same day. mind you i can spot the ones who are looking for a free quote. in which case i tell them how much it will cost but i don’t tell them whats wrong.
regards

That’s old-fashioned practices! 🙁
I know, because we’re the same. A small company, with few over-heads; so we don’t need to charge alot for calls. But I’m finally convincing Goatboy senior that our work is worth something. What’s the point in working for nowt? We are professionals, doing a professional job.

Bite the bullet time! Don’t undervalue your own work (I’m sure Kenny has said this hundred’s of times before). Set a standard call-out charge. Just a small one at first if you want. Set a charge for condemnation notes, then tell the customer that if they buy a new machine, you’ll refund the charge towards the new appliance. You may lose a few customers, but only the tight-wads 8)

Weeding out the ‘I want to know if it’s worth fixing’ brigade is getting
a necessary evil now if you advertise no call out charge.Tell them you do charge for estimate / diagnosis time and explain why, it soon gets shot of the liberty takers.
Genuine customers realise that a good engineer is something worth paying for!

After spending 13 years working for Hoover, (yes I did work through that free flights fiasco), and being loaded up to the eyeballs with jobs, I wish I had started on my own years ago. I now average 7 jobs a day, no callout charge with a set labour charge. I never spend less than 45 mins at each job , including Hpt. brushes, what other job has you being invited into other peoples homes and swapping life histories, I luv it!!!

I allso worked for Hoover For 13years,Before i went self employed
And used to get complaints i was to fast, The boss didnt mind as i was clearing more jobs then anyone else.
But i worked out as long as you dont rush in and rush out, with their comment “are you in a hurry”. They dont feel the job has been rushed,
IF i do a Quick job like brushs I make it last longer then 5 minutes
Booking time on jobs, 2 hour appointments,
Take zanussi tubs away for bearings, rebook other bearing jobs after taking deposit -
