I guess we all come across an appliance which has us stumped now & again. Personally i would never fob a customer off with “oh its the pcb, its BER” or whatever just to get the callout.

That kind of dishonesty will usually come back to bite your bum, in fact there was a fella round these parts taken to court a number of years ago for diagnosing BER on on a rather expensive commercial dryer & pocketing a £50 callout.. he went belly up about a year later.

Nah, treat others as you would wish to be treated, i always found that key to surviving in business (and life in general)

Not at all! Better off walking away and not charging a penny than guessing and possibly getting it wrong and costing you money, embarrassment and headaches!

When the need arises just be honest with them.I usually explain that most manufacturers offer the small independants little technical advice, and I will come back shortly after visiting the engineers friend (UKW 😉 ). If nothing is forthcoming, refer them back to the manufacturer reminding them that a hefty call out charge could be imminent 😥 .
In that situation I don’t ask for a fee, but most right minded customers still see you as an honest tradesman because you tried your damndest to help them out, and aloy insist on paying for your time as well!!!
