Participanthaving successfully avoided doing bearings on majority w/m, this recession has made people think more about repairs. have a well abused, slightly dented wm-series hotpoint not an economically viable repair imo but cust adamant that she doesnt want a new one as she thinks this will see her out 😯 – its the one with teh plastic tubs clipped together at the front, and screw on pulleys.
Thing is having never had to remove a wm-model pulley, how the hell do any of you manage it?
techiques please 🙂

was obviously not using the right sort of wedge. used a packaging batton off a hp cooker and that dug into the pulley enough not to slip. either that or it was the weetabix/spinage mix i just consumed whilst hunting on here 😉

I use a cold chisel and ‘big Henry’ a 4lb lump hammer.Knock a notch in the nut and then clout it until it moves. To remove the pulley jam the wooden handle through the pulley and spin the drum anti clockwise.

I use my 40+ year old, Hotpoint Company issue, huge 24/30mm ring spanner, I wedge the pulley and clout the spanner, saves damaging the nut.
Its a veteran of almost 3000 Hotpoint bearing changes, still as good as new. 8)
Sadly the wooden wedge issued at the same time is no more. 😥Jim.

I replaced a bearing and drum support on an 18580. Still going strong with it’s original Tompson pump with the clear cover. I’ve never been so busy repairing antiques. Fixed a lid switch on a 1509 top loader the other week. No leak from the pump and passed the PAT test with flying colours.

I still have several 1850 types with the original Hotpoint made pump, large black plastic cover with a metal watershed over the top, first used on the 1600 machines. 😀

Clearly ‘upt North’ must be stuck in some sort of weird time-warp, even Jims Grandfather Clock has stopped….. :clown:

There’s a whole thread on that somewhere about 2005/6.

I put a door gasket on an Indesit L5 last week! Bet most of you have never even seen one.

Was that an L5E or the Bio version, havn’t seen one for years – first machines I worked on back in the 70s. Its a wonder the outer drum hasn’t rusted away

Still got an L6 on site. This one was much more advanced. Got a soap drawer instead of a lid and an electric pump instead of the L5’s mechanical one!!
Not a brush or a module in site. Now look at ’em. ???December 31, 2011 at 4:39 pm #364974Martin

I’ve still got a couple of chrome rocker switches, a pump body and rubber impellor in stock, just in case Colin, how sad am I ? (Don’t answer that 😈 )
