I’ve managed to find a relevant service manual (link below) and following the troubleshooting steps for E51 on page 46 it again points to the PCB (and probably the triac) being the issue.

To finish off the story for anyone coming across this in the future with the same problem, I got the replacement triac in the post today and following me soldering it onto the PCB, the washing machine is working fine again. So in conclusion, the triac was the problem and replacing it (which didn’t take much skill part from a basic understanding of soldering) fixed the issue. The traic part number is as originally posted by Chris (BTB16-700BWRG) and there a link to an image showing where this part is on the PCB and its part number (if you zoom in) below. I got my replacement triac from eBay as Farnell has a minimum order of £20.

Happy fixing!

ParticipantHi guys,
i have the same problem now but the files in the links provided on the thread have disappeared. I would like confirmation of where the Triac is located (unless there’s only one on the PCB?) And if you took out the PCB from the machine to fix it, it looks complicated to take it out due to multiple screws and cables fixed to it. Thanks.January 9, 2022 at 2:02 pm #344575electrofix
Moderatorbefore you jump in too deep and since someone has linked a service manual above, pu it in service mode and see if any fault codes come out

ParticipantFurther to earlier posts on the JLWM1203 failing to start, I also went down the route of replacing the door interlock because the door wasn’t locking. That wasn’t the issue. Speedojames posted a link to the service manual, which helped enormously, as the machine will run self-diagnostic tests. E51 was displayed, which indicated “motor power triac short-circuited”. I located the triac which abuts the heat sink. It didn’t look burned, but since several postings had suggested it may need replacing, I followed that course. Like Begood_John, I was a bit apprehensive about removing the PCB, but by photographing each stage and proceeding with care, I removed the facia, unplugged all the sockets from the PCB and edge connectors, removed the four screws holding the PCB and unclipped it. The fitted triac in my WM had no identification numbers, so many thanks to those who correctly identified it as BTB 16-700BWRG. I bought three from Farnell; also a vacuum desoldering iron (Amazon), a fine tip soldering iron (Toolstation) and a tube of Servisol heat sink compound (Ebay). Today I installed the new triac, testing the soldering, reassembled it all. The machine is again working properly. Many thanks to all who have posted on this issue – I could not have repaired it without your information.
