ParticipantI know this is probably not a good time to start up on my own but I’ve just been layed off & being a white goods engineer for some 8 years thought I’d go for it. 😯
So far I’ve created my website & bought my domain name but thats about it so where do I go from here ? I thought leaflet drops & free ads or local papers – I’ve reg’d in Yell.com & would like to be approved by you guys on this site to be an approved company ?I’ve got my trading name but haven’t reg’d that with reg house yet, I have quotes for Liabilty insurance but would love some help on exactly how much cover I need ?
I would appreciate any help & you never know I might meet up & buy you a beer !

If you can make it take friday off and come to the WTA meeting at Coventry. You will meet loads of engineers, manufacturers and spares suppliers who will give you advice. Further details can be had in the general trade forum.

Find out when Yellow Pages comes out in your area. Expensive but ‘usually’ pays back. Google local and Adwords if its thought about!!Other than that local papers, church mags, shop windows and notice boards, but NOT the Homebase , BnQ, Morrisons notice board ads that you pay upfront for. Think where you might look for an emergency service ad or remember an ad from,….local chippy in the queue.
Oh yes, and don’t forget to tell your mates ,relatives, etc what you do for a living. My aunty used to do car boots and stuck a card in everything she sold.

I am in the same situation, here .
Starting beginning of April, and trying to get everything together in the mean time.
Unfortunately, I cant get to Coventry on Friday, but hope I may be able to glean some information afterwards.
Good luck Redflame 😀February 19, 2009 at 7:40 pm #277533Redflame

Firstly, Thank you all for you’re valued input.
I didn’t expect such a fantastic response ! 😛
I’ve got my cards printed up by Vistaprint & have used them a while now thanks for that anyhoo !
Unfortunately I can’t make Coventry even though I would love to, as I have no major financial backing I am having to work on a building site just to make ends meet & pay the bills so can’t afford to take the day off 🙁 – I do the appliance repairs in the early eves & weekends at the moment but long to have a steady stream of customers/repairs.
I’ve got an ad on Yell.com & have already had some reponse but no call outs yet (…but they are pending ! Flood damage not covered by manufacturer !)
Now to the mine field of Public Liability Insurance who’s got the best cover & has good value for money?
I’ve had a few quotes from the usual AXA, Norwich Union etc…etc… but all in the 400 -500 range – This seems alot !?Thanks again for your help 😉

what are peoples thoughts on local papers adverts??
are there any accounts to look for or more importantly to avoid?? oviously this will depend on areas im from Lanarkshire just outside glasvagas Scotland 🙂got 1000’s of leaflets and buisness cards ordered, set up website and emails, got phones sorted and ads on a few websites.

Hi Kev, you need to register with the Gas Safe Register, who take over from Corgi at the end of March.
It will cost you more first time because of the regisration fee and after that i think it’s around £175.00 per year
Do you have the dom gas safety and ckr1 tickets.?
Thats about all you need to get yourself registered.

Thats all you need, have a look at the Gas Safe website, that should tell you whats required for first time registrations.
Good luck with the new venture.
