yes i think it should be connected to the earth loop. after all my kitchen sink didn’t have a three or two core cable supplying it (ha ha) but it should still be bonding to the building earth.

But your sink is not an electrical appliance is it.
If they should be earthed, then why not supply them earthed with a 3 core cable? Believe me there is not even a earth point to attatch an earth to.

the point i was trying to make is that even non electrical items which can potentially conduct electricity (my sink, radiators, bathtaps etc) should all be earthed. if it hasn’t got a tag, then use a self tapper.

I made this point earlier Keith, it did get a little taken out of context at one point but nevertheless your comments add nicely to what I said earlier. Having said that, it is certainly true that the majority of domestic extractors and cooker hoods are of foreign imported origin. The motors are indeed the double insulated type which conveniently for installation in the UK can be ‘tapped’ into the lighting circuit in most households.

The strange anomaly here appears that whilst light fittings with metal bases have to be earthed, (naturally) double insulated fitting don’t! And rightly so installers only couple the units with two core cable onto a lighting ring main. However 75{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of the construction of cooker hoods is in a metal cabinet. They extract huge amounts of steam and condensation in their lifetime, it follows that such a device, for safety’s sake at least, should be earthed?

Eastlmark realised the electrical potential of such a unit that wasn’t earthed simply by putting a Voltstick near it. And had that unit been earthed I’m sure no such condition would arise without at least the consumer unit RCD tripping?

    Re: Live hood??

Sorry Martin, I have not yet come across a hood tapped into the lighting circuit. they all have a ringmain socket into which they are plugged into and they generally come with mains lead attatched. It would then be simple to have a 3 core lead and earth the hood but this is not the case. And it doesnt solve my original problem of why 2 hoods repaired in the last 2 years for MFI had this condition and the other 92 didnt.
And as for sinks and radiators they are considered part of the earth ring and therefore need to be earthed for continuity of water pipe earthing, a hood has neither and therefore doesnt come under the same regulations.
